As the Office Administrative Assistant, passion for the labor movement, love for union work, and dedication to hard work, will be the keys to success in this role. The individual selected for this position will serve as a team player for the entire office staff. The ability to efficiently perform a variety of tasks while promoting a positive attitude and excellent time management is essential. Fostering an atmosphere of teamwork, reliability, and integrity will serve as great motivating factors for working with the Metropolitan Washington Council’s office team. Some of of the day-to-day tasks will include but aren’t limited to:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greeting and directing all office guest
  • Service, screen, and direct incoming callers to appropriate department
  • Receiving and distributing incoming mail/packages to various office staff
  • Serve as point person for outgoing mail and package preparation and shipping
  • Database creation and maintenance for members and vendors
  • Maintain office filing systems
  • Manage conference and meeting room calendars and logistics
  • Maintain supply inventory for offices as well as reception area
  • Establish a system of monitoring office equipment to include paper, toner, regular maintenance, etc.
  • Maintain reception and lobby area(s) as needed
  • Serve as building liaison for various tasks to include receiving office guest and meeting room usage throughout the building.

Qualifications & Skills Required:

  • High School diploma and 3-5 years experience working in a similar role in a union office, political or social advocacy setting preferred
  • Must be able to interact with members and others with a professional demeanor
  • Must maintain a positive attitude, even in extreme situations
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite and Social Media
  • Excellent oral and written communication, Spanish or other language encouraged
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Strong attention to detail and order
  • Working knowledge of unions and union operations is a plus
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices a must
