SEIU Local 2015 currently represents more than 372,000 long-term care and nursing home employees in ten counties around the state of California. We are a growing progressive organization and need to strengthen our political voice in the state of California to best serve our members. The Deputy Political Director reports to the Political Director and is responsible for strategic planning, leading on issue and electoral campaigns in Southern California on behalf of the union that empower our members to be strong forces in their work, in the legislative process and at the ballot box

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop political strategy and integrate politics with all the work of the union for Northern Counties
  • Manage a successful program to create effective advocacy relationships between the membership and elected officials, community partners and other stakeholders;
  • Train Internal Organizing on recruiting members for political fundraising, electoral campaigns, and legislative meetings and other community based activities;
  • Manage our participation with Central labor councils, various coalitions and constituencies and other SEIU Locals;
  • Coordinate political field activities, lobby visits, phone banking and events for our policy, legislative and electoral participation campaigns at the city, state and federal level;
  • Mobilize and train new member leaders and activist for legislative and electoral activity;
  • Support contract and organizing campaigns, including rallies, press events and targeted employer activity;
  • Build the union’s capacity through COPE fundraising;
  • Assist with coordinating the union’s work with local labor and community allies
  • Establishing and maintaining relationship with elected officials and key elected staff.

The Deputy Director of Politics may come from a variety of other organizing and political experiences, including having had a political field or strategic position of another major not-for-profit organization, labor or political organization or as campaign consultant. It is imperative, wherever experience has been gained, that he/she possess the leadership, motivational skills to assist in uniting the organization around achieving a comprehensive set of political objectives.

  • Minimum of five years legislative and proven talents in political organizing or campaign experience with a labor union, state or local agency or association, non-profit community organization or progressive elected official;
  • Working knowledge of California political, electoral and legislative processes.
  • Ability to engage, nurture and encourage a diverse membership.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a high-performance management team.
  • Ability to build relationships and work closely with elected officials.
  • Personal creativity and strategic vision with the ability to listen to others.
  • Strong demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Higher level of personal and professional integrity.
  • Skill in the use of computers to include Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel), and Internet.
  • Fluency in a second language is desirable

Physical Requirements:
Work is generally performed in the field with members and outside constituents. Long and irregular hours required. Travel required.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:
The Deputy Political Director reports directly to the Political Director.
