What We’re Looking For:
The Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) is recruiting to fill multiple vacancies of our Council Representative position. These positions work independently and part of a team to coordinate and facilitate internal organizing and conduct worksite visits to engage members and offer solutions to workplace issues. Council Representatives activate membership by motivating and assisting members in coordinating workplace job actions and rallies; interacts appropriately with members to resolve workplace issues through member mobilization, both in groups and in a one-to-one setting; and schedules, advertises, and conducts workplace informational meetings.

Incumbents conduct political grassroots organizing by scheduling, advertising, and conducting PEOPLE and Get Out The Vote (GOTV) presentations; schedules, advertises, and conducts training for stewards, MAT Leaders, and members; mentors stewards; attends monthly local membership meetings; and attends local and regional Union Management Communication Meetings. Additional duties include:

  • Processes lower level grievances on behalf of members
  • Attends and presents cases to Local and Statewide Grievance Committees
  • Attends pre-disciplinary (Loudermill) meetings
  • Attends and presents cases at the top agency step grievance hearings

Required Qualifications:
Is educated in, or has experience with, labor unions, labor or community organizing, and basic personnel practices.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Possess good written and oral communication skills, by reading, writing, and communicating effectively.
  • The ability to present information and speak to groups of varying sizes.
  • Possesses a valid Washington State driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle and the ability to travel.
  • Possess basic MS Windows-based computer aptitude, is skilled in the use of a PC and laptop, has the ability to use a cellular phone, and is generally trainable.
  • May be called upon to carry and move up to twenty (20) pounds of weight; participates in activities requiring long periods of standing and sitting, both indoors and outdoors.

Special Note:
This recruitment will be used to fill positions in the Olympia and Tacoma field offices. This position is overtime eligible and may be required to work some weekends.  Travel is normally limited to the assigned area of responsibility.  Must have a valid driver’s license, use of personal vehicle, and valid vehicle insurance.  Release of driving record required prior to interview.  Out of state candidates must provide drive record at the time of interview.  Benefits include annual and sick leave, cell phone allowance, vehicle allowance, medical/dental, life, and long term disability insurance, and holidays. Salary range is $51,994 to $60,097 and will be determined commensurate with experience.
