Political Action Specialist/Organizer

Based in Hartford, CT

PURPOSE OF CLASS:
With officers of the Union, develops political plan of the Union.  Works with Union staff and rank and file leaders to implement plan.  May function as an organizer on time limited assignments.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Supervised by President of the Union.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May lead other organizers on political action activities.  May supervise political action intern.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Develop, in consultation with the officers and team leaders, a plan which defines the Union’s political approach and strategy.  Assists president in targeting key campaigns and use of staff resources on those campaigns.  Works with political allies to develop strategic approach to issues of concern to the Union.  Ascertains what proposed legislation would affect members and informs officers and staff.  Works with team leaders and organizers to increase member support of candidates with acceptable positions on Union issues.  Works on key political campaigns.  Performs research on political ramifications of Union issues.  Does community outreach to create political allies.  Acts as an organizer on selected assignments; analyzes the impact of the state budget on members.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Excellent knowledge of politics, campaigning, and how these interrelate with labor issues. Communication; ability to listen actively – frame issues; dedication to workers’ rights and progress; excellent interpersonal skills; lead and motivate workers; ability to deal with conflicting/changing priorities; flexibility; self-directedness, ability to think strategically; skill in meeting many and varying deadlines; negotiate formally and informally; balance assertiveness, aggressiveness, stamina, dedication, and supportiveness (certain assignments require specialized bodies of knowledge).

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Knowledge of issues of workers and workplaces.  Three years experience in political action and/or union organizing.  Knowledge of state budgetary process.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Hours can be long and varying; shifting priorities and deadlines.  Decisions can have serious effects on Union’s effectiveness, and on members’ working conditions, which is a source of stress.  Some work is under adverse conditions (late hours, unsafe areas, confrontational situations).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Current valid driver’s license.
