We are seeking energetic and passionate individuals interested in starting social justice careers in labor organizing.

The Service Employees International Union Local 73 is a powerful voice for workers. Local 73 is comprised of 29,000 public and human service workers throughout Illinois and Northwest Indiana representing dozens of job classifications. Members of Local 73 provide vital services that Illinois and Northwest Indiana residents and communities rely on.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and grassroots organizing
  • Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, as well as take individual initiative
  • Possession of excellent listening skills and the ability to follow direction
  • Ability to effectively manage time independently and carry out work plans with minimal supervision
  • Possession of sharp problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to motivate and activate others
  • Willingness to engage workers in varies setting about worksite issues.
  • Ability to learn from past experiences and incorporate feedback
  • Possession of basic map navigation skills a plus
  • Ability to deal constructively with challenging obstacles
  • Adapt to changing circumstances
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds/cultures and to comprehend the concerns of others.
  • Other duties as assigned and directed

Requirements:

  • Candidates with union and/or community organizing experience are preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable automobile and mandated auto insurance
  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours, including evenings, some weekends and holidays.
  • Experience and knowledge in relevant computer programs, including word processing, desktop publishing and database software.
  • Ability to travel and work away from Chicago, sometimes for extended periods of time.
  • Bilingual (English-Spanish) fluency a plus, but not required.
