Position Description & Responsibilities
CPI seeks a dynamic Deputy Director to oversee the development and operation of campaigns and programs and to coordinate our strategic programmatic initiatives. The Deputy Directory will report to the Executive Director and will directly supervise program and campaign staff. Experience as an organizer, who has successfully built coalitions for issue campaigns, is strongly preferred.

Given our dynamic environment and need to empower employees to make strategic decisions, the ideal candidate is a highly collaborative manager. The ideal deputy director should be an excellent strategic thinker, planner and implementer. They should also be an effective communicator, able to lead multi-disciplinary staff teams and someone who has significant experience working in the policy arena on strategic policy advocacy campaigns. The ideal candidate is passionate about economic and social justice and is committed to working with the labor movement and other allies to advance CPI’s mission.

The Deputy Director’s primary responsibilities will be:

  • Partnering with department directors and campaign leads to ensure all teams have ambitious but attainable goals and plans in place to meet them; providing clear and useful feedback; and serving as a thought partner and resource to senior leaders in their realms of responsibility, including on issues related to the management of their teams.
  • Managing systems for communication, coordination and strategizing within the organization and between campaigns.
  • Working closely with the Executive Director, board and staff to develop, articulate and implement overall organizational strategy.
  • Managing policy campaigns.
  • Building out an annual goal-setting process and develop a robust set of metrics and systems to track progress against goal.
  • Implementing and overseeing performance management systems throughout the organization, and supporting organizational leaders in hiring, coaching, and retaining high performers, and addressing performance issues.
  • Representing CPI and CPI campaigns externally with a variety of audiences, including but not limited to elected officials, unions, social justice organizations, funders, media and the public as requested.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications: Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to racial and economic justice and the labor movement. Also needed: willingness to work long hours and weekends when necessary, and ability to work independently.

  • At least 3 years of public policy experience, working in government, community, union, or social/racial justice non-profit organizations
  • At least 2 years of staff management experience
  • Experience leading a fast-paced, highly collaborative, policy campaign
  • Effective strategic planning, program evaluation and project management skill
  • Ability to analyze and establish effective and supportive cross-department and cross-program coordination, organizational procedures, and management systems
  • Direct experience building coalitions for issue campaigns is preferred
  • Organizing experience strongly preferred
  • San Diego ties strongly valued
  • Bilingual (English-Spanish) a plus.
