Headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, near Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, the Allied Pilots Association (APA) serves as the certified collective bargaining agent for the 15,000 professional pilots who fly for American Airlines.

APA was founded in 1963 and is the largest independent pilots’ union in the world. APA provides a broad range of representation services for its members and devotes more than 20 percent of its dues income to support aviation safety.

Position Description and Responsibilities
The Labor Attorney provides a variety of legal services to protect and advance the rights of the Allied Pilots Association and its members; actively supports the Association’s programs, policies, and initiatives to strengthen the organization’s power through member engagement and organizing; and represents the Association and its members in proceedings in various venues including before arbitrators, administrative agencies, and state and federal courts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Represent the Association in arbitrations, administrative hearings, and court proceedings.
  • Provide timely and accurate written and verbal legal advice to Association staff and member groups on a variety of issues including, but not limited to labor law, employment law, collective bargaining and labor relations and other areas of the law relevant to the Association’s activities.
  • Monitor developments and trends in labor law, employment law, and recent arbitration decisions that may impact the Association or its members.
  • Review Association policies and procedures applicable to its members for legal compliance and risk mitigation; recommend changes as needed.
  • Engage in legal research and writing of varying degrees of complexity.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with counsel from affiliated organizations and outside legal consultants.
  • In coordination with subject matter experts, prepare and present educational programs regarding aspects of collective bargaining, labor law, and employment law for staff and members as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Report to the Senior Director of Legal Affairs.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Education: Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an accredited law school required.
  • Experience: Minimum of four years as a practicing attorney is required. Experience representing unions in labor matters is required. Railway Labor Act experience is preferred.
  • Admissions: Must be a member in good standing and either admitted to practice law in the state of Texas or willing to become admitted within a reasonable period of time.

This full-time position is located at the Allied Pilots Association headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. Some minimal travel may be required.
