Position Summary
Our San Antonio Alliance of Teachers and Support Personnel, the elected employee organization in the San Antonio Independent School District, is seeking a Union Organizer. Our union is dedicated to achieving REAL RESULTS for our students and our community. We negotiate with SAISD regarding compensation, benefits, education policies, and working conditions. In addition to our strong local organization, we are affiliated with the National Education Association (NEA), Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA), the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and Texas AFT.

We are seeking an Organizer who can move potential members to members, members to activists, and activists to leaders. Our Alliance Organizers need to be skilled at guiding our members to build power and capacity at their worksites and in the school district. Our Organizers strategize with our President and Lead Organizer to plan effective organizing campaigns that engage members and potential members as well as community members. Our Organizers help develop strong school/worksite employee leaders by guiding and coaching them in organizing, problem solving, communications, and member engagement.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train, develop, and inspire members through one-on-one and group communication.
  • Work in schools and departments to identify, build relationships with, develop, and motivate worksite leaders through one-on-one communication.
  • Work in schools and departments to identify issues and work collaboratively with the specific group to resolve issues in a way that builds power and capacity at the school or department.
  • Build and maintain active worksite leadership structures.
  • Organize and lead productive meetings.
  • Design and/or co-facilitate educational workshops such as “Know Your Rights,” etc.
  • Perform administrative tasks necessary for organizing such as maintaining databases, producing materials and correspondences.
  • Develop materials and worksite plans for assigned areas.
  • Contribute ideas to the planning of organizing campaigns.
  • Handle individual and group problem solving and grievance related issues that arise at assigned worksites.
  • Attend appropriate trainings for growth and development.
  • Work flexible hours to meet organization needs, including evenings and weekends.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Experience as an organizer in union or social justice movement setting preferred
  • Willing to work long, irregular hours (including nights and weekends), as needed
  • Commitment to social change and to carrying out the vision and program of the organization
  • Ability to work both independently and as a contributing team member.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good organizational and administrative skills, including basic computer skills
  • Must be a self-starter with strong interpersonal skills
  • Willing and able to travel to appropriate worksites
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English) preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and insured car
