The United Teachers of New Orleans is uniting charter school teachers and staff to win a voice for themselves, their families and for the children they educate across the city of New Orleans. Across the country, charter teachers and staff are coming together to be a strong voice for their profession by joining the American Federation of Teachers.

The United Teachers of New Orleans Charter School Organizing Project seeks an Organizer to join our campaign to strengthen the voice of charter school educators and stand for quality schools. This project is a joint venture between the American Federation of Teachers and the United Teachers of New Orleans.

The Organizer will be responsible for all aspects of a union organizing campaign including building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and increasing and sustaining motivation of organizing committee and activists.

Qualifications for Applicant:

  • Knowledge, experience and background indicating capabilities in organizing
  • Demonstrated commitment to empower workers through the labor movement or community or environmental organizing.
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Willingness to take direction and work in a team
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends and travel as required
  • Computer literacy
  • A commitment to social justice and the mission of the AFT.
  • Valid driver’s license and insured car.

Summary Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organize and mobilize workers.
  • Attend daily and weekly meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and plan activities
  • House visit workers, conduct 1-1 visits, group meetings and other interactions with workers.
  • Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required for periods of time.
  • Take direction on daily and weekly activities to grow AFT membership and/or support

We provide in-depth on-the-job training in all aspects of union organizing for organizers to build their skills and grow in the position.

This job requires long and irregular hours, weekend work, and travel out of state.

Salary and Benefits:
Compensation is based on experience. We provide excellent benefits, 401K, vacation, health insurance.
