Lead Organizer

Bay Area, Davis/Sacramento,

UAW Local 5810 represents over 6,500 postdoctoral researchers at University of California and Lawrence Berkeley Lab. It was chartered in 2008 as a member led/ member run union that through collective bargaining and organization is committed to improve the working conditions and the lives of working people. Overview:
5810 seeks experienced lead organizers to facilitate the organizing of academic workers within the University of California. The successful applicant must be able to lead a group of staff, take part in strategic planning and coordinate in sync with statewide efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee, guide and lead group of organizers
  • Create weekly and monthly plans to meet goals that include thought on appropriate strategy and tactics to utilize by organizing team
  • Elaborate flyers and other written materials as needed
  • Intensive outreach to workers
  • Identify, recruit and train leaders
  • Move workers to take collective action to advance campaign goals
  • Organize around worker issues and concerns
  • Work with diverse immigrant community

*Additional duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work with diverse workforce, collaborate as part of a team, work in a deadline-driven environment
  • Proven experience in leading campaigns, projects and staff
  • Proven experience with coordinating collective action efforts 
  • Ability to frame issues and follow messaging in accordance to mission and principles
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative on tasks
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for reliable transportation
  • Knowledge of common office software
  • Availability for periodic travel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in labor organizing
  • Experience leading multiple components of a campaign
  • Experience with academic and/or public sector employment
  • Familiarity with the research workplace
  • Understanding of escalation model organizing
  • Fluency in multiple languages
