The Organization
Massachusetts Education Justice Alliance (MEJA) is a coalition of parents, students, educators, and labor, religious, student and community activists and organizations committed to protecting and improving public education and fighting for economic, social and racial justice. 

MEJA works to build alliances across the state on education issues while addressing the root causes of poverty that perpetuate an unequal system of education and impede low-income families from getting the education they deserve. The Position: Executive Director
The Executive Director (ED) will work closely with the MEJA Board and local MEJA groups across Massachusetts to develop and lead the capacity building and campaign priorities of MEJA. The Executive Director is responsible for building and maintaining a diverse statewide coalition and engaging with its member organizations and activists. This position is based in Boston but will require regular travel around the state.

Responsibilities: 
Campaigns:  MEJA takes action through campaigns for public education and for racial, social and economic justice.  The Executive Director will coordinate campaign development, mobilization and evaluation in collaboration with the MEJA Board and member groups.  This will include legislative campaigns, ballot initiatives and support for local organizing. We also coordinate with the national Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools.

Supervision Responsibilities:  The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the coalition and supervision and support of any other staff and volunteers. The ED works under the direction of the MEJA Board and reports to its officers. This board hires and evaluates the Executive Director. 

Fundraising and Financial Administration:  The Executive Director has primary responsibility for ensuring the financial stability and sound fiscal management of the organization. They develop an annual budget and fundraising plan in collaboration with the Board Treasurer and provide accurate monthly reporting.  They work with a professional accounting firm to ensure an annual financial review and all appropriate tax filings and ethics reporting are properly completed.

Organizational Development and Support:  Working with the MEJA organizing committee the Executive Director is responsible, along with any other staff, for the recruitment to, and the development and support of, the statewide structures of MEJA  The Executive Director does not primarily staff, but oversees and supports as needed the local MEJA groups to ensure the alignment of the organization statewide along overseeing the building of a volunteer activist base of students, parents, educators and allies. The Executive Director will work with the MEJA Legislative Committee to develop the MEJA legislative platform and coordinate the member organizations and activists in support of it. The Executive Director will participate and help guide the Research Action Committee as part of developing and understanding the Massachusetts public education landscape and players.

Communications: Working with the MEJA communications committee the Executive Director will oversee the communications strategy of the organization as well as represent the organization in the press and on social media platforms. The Executive Director will maintain and update the MEJA database and actively use social media and send regular email communications, both internal and external.

Coalitions/alliances:  In addition, the Executive Director will develop relationships with and represent MEJA at other public education and social justice-related coalitions and alliances.

Qualifications:

• Solid commitment to the principles of social, economic and racial justice.
• Knowledge of Massachusetts public education issues preferred.
• Minimum of four years grassroots organizing experience and minimum two years as lead organizer or Executive Director preferred. 
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
• Ability to be a self-starter and to work independently toward agreed upon goals. 
• A strong ability to motivate people, develop staff and leaders and delegate responsibility.
• Ability to develop and maintain relationships with a diverse group of organizations and individuals.
• An understanding of youth and parent organizing, the labor movement, community organizing, faith-based groups and other social movements.
• Demonstrated ability to raise funds.
• Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends.
• Proficient in computer skills, including database management, word processing.
• Bookkeeping and financial management skills.
• Own vehicle available for work (mileage is reimbursed).
• Minimum commitment of two years.

Also Desired: Experience organizing parents, students or educators a plus.

Salary: $57,000-$65,000, depending on experience.
