The Position
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit whose scientists and engineers work to solve some of our planet’s most pressing environmental and safety problems. UCS combines technical analysis and effective organizing and advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions for stemming the tide of global warming, sustainable food policy and agriculture, energy and transportation, fighting misinformation and reducing the threat of catastrophic nuclear war.

The UCS Food and Environment Program is leading the call for transformation to a food system that ensures access to affordable, healthy food for all Americans; protects the nation’s farmland, air, water, and climate; and guarantees fair wages and working conditions for millions of farm and food workers. As part of a 14-person interdisciplinary team, you will convene priority coalitions focused on addressing racial equity and social justice in the food system. You will contribute to outreach and direct advocacy efforts with coalition partners, lead efforts to engage with diverse communities in support of UCS goals, and conduct research and writing on equity-focused topics.

This is a one-year temporary grant-funded position with a possibility of renewal.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates priority coalition efforts, with a focus on equity in the food system in this country. Facilitates coalition members to identify and develop joint goals, policy objectives, and written materials.
• Works to build member-led coalition initiatives and personally engages coalition partners in key aspects of joint work.
• Organizes, participates in, and supports logistics for conferences, convenings, and workshops with coalition partners to highlight local food system innovation and leverage local success.
• Identifies ways that UCS analysis and policy expertise could support grassroots organizations working on food and sustainable agriculture issues.
• Contributes substantively to analyses to advance food equity goals.
• Develops expertise with regard to food equity issues and policies.
• Tracks legislative action related to program and coalition goals.
• Assists with development of advocacy strategy
• Cultivates, recruits, and trains allies to participate in Washington-based advocacy efforts and ensures participants represent a diverse range of backgrounds.
• Performs other related functions as directed.

Qualifications and experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and three to five years of comparable and relevant experience;
• Demonstrated interest in and passion for work that serves the public interest—in particular, issues of diversity and racial equity in the food system.
• Considerable self-motivation, cultural competency, attention to detail, and knowledge of office and administrative support procedures, including business English, word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
• Strong organizational abilities, good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as a member of a team;
• Excellent interpersonal skills—including the ability to interact professionally and sensitively with individuals with a wide range of experiences, skills, backgrounds and responsibilities.

May spend extended periods at computer. Four to ten days of overnight travel per year is required.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time, one-year temporary position based in UCS’s Washington, DC office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary is around $47,500 UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.
