Public Citizen is a national, non-partisan, public interest group with over 400,000 members and activists. The Congress Watch division conducts public education campaigns and advocates before the Congress and administrative agencies on money in politics, open government, corporate accountability, financial regulation, public health and safety, healthcare, and access to justice.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: The advocate will coordinate and conduct Congress Watch’s advocacy on healthcare, with specific focus on the need for Medicate-for-all and drug and medical device policy, as well as assist with policy development, conduct research, and do public education and outreach.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and execute strategic legislative and regulatory advocacy campaigns. Work to develop strategy with the Vice President of Legislative Affairs and Congress watch team.
  • Research and write white papers, reports, fact sheets, letters, testimony, and comments on proposed rules. Testify before Congress and administrative agencies, and coordinate the testimony of other experts.
  • Represent Public Citizen in public forums. Work with and organize coalition partners, as well as individuals affected by policies on which Public Citizen advocates.
  • Work closely with our health policy experts in Public Citizen’s Health Research and Access to Medicines divisions.
  • Develop and maintain media relationships and respond to press inquiries. Write editorial board memoranda, press releases, letters to the editor, opinion editorials, and blog posts.
  • Other duties as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS: J.D., M.A. or M.D., or comparable expertise in healthcare or drug and device policy, and at least three years of experience with legislative or regulatory advocacy preferred. Outstanding analytical thinking, political judgment, and oral and written communication skills. Strong drives to self-start and self-finish. Collaborative spirit, high energy, and enthusiasm.
