Job Summary: BGA is seeking a full-time temporary Michigan Organizer, ideally based in southeast Michigan. The Organizer will be responsible for engaging and mobilizing working people, local leaders, and companies in the automotive sector and raising awareness of local manufacturing gains in advanced, clean, and efficient vehicles and technology, and the need to build on this success. The position will work with labor, environmental, community, and other organizations to build support for policies and actions to sustain and create good jobs in today and tomorrow’s technology across the vehicle and transportation sector.

The Michigan Organizer works closely with BGA staff and Michigan BGA member organizations to develop and execute initiatives, campaigns, and communications and policy/legislative strategy. While principally focused on the state level, the Organizer may also be tasked to engage in federal and regional energy, transportation, and clean technology initiatives. The Organizer reports to the Director of Vehicles and Advanced Transportation Program, and works closely with the Organizing and Communications Directors to coordinate their work.

This is a nine-month position, with possibility of extension.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Michigan Organizer will help develop and implement the initiatives of the BlueGreen Alliance to build a strong, fair, clean economy, and increase collaborative efforts of labor and environmental organizations across a range of issues.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to:

• Engage unions and workers, along with automotive suppliers and other grasstops community leaders and local elected officials to hold roundtable forums and other public events aimed at showcasing ideas, building an on-the-ground coalition, and conducting earned media;
• Identify and engage grasstops, hold in-district meetings, and carry out other events that strategically engage key elected leaders;
• Conduct outreach to labor union members and leaders who represent the workforce in key auto and components manufacturing companies around the state of Michigan and to identify impactful stories and spokespeople to tell these stories.
• Recruit, develop, and work with BGA’s communications team to deploy local level voices as part of a communications plan. 
• Other duties as required.

Skills & Qualifications:
Required

• Experience with or strong knowledge of labor unions and workplace and manufacturing issues.
• Experience with environmental or environmental justice organizations, or strong knowledge of related issues.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work with partners and colleagues in multiple locations.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and strong orientation to building collaborative structures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience speaking before groups.
• An ability to travel to locations throughout Michigan, and elsewhere in the Midwest as needed.
• A deep commitment to the mission of the BlueGreen Alliance.

Preferred

• Familiarity with or strong interest in the automotive sector, clean energy, climate change, and other related issues.
• Experience driving legislative and/or or issue-based advocacy campaigns.
• Demonstrated experience in campaign-related policy development, including analyzing legislation and other policy tools, legislative outreach, and effective messaging.
• A strong foundation in coordinating campaigns that involve multiple partners and stakeholders, including labor unions, environmental organizations, and supportive businesses.
• Ability to juggle multiple issues and campaigns.

Other:

• Flexible schedule and from time to time attend meetings before or after office hours.

Additional Information: Will consider either consultant contractor or employee. This is a new nine month funded position. Periodic travel is required.
