Communication Specialist

Reports to the National Office – Position Based in New York City, NY

Position Overview
This position reports to the director of communication, education and research. We are seeking a stand-out communicator with exceptional writing and editing skills, with proven experience writing news stories, features, editorials, speeches, press releases, promotional/advertising copy, and social media posts. Must be able to produce effective flyers, leaflets and other materials to support organizing and contract campaigns. Strong grasp of social media and how to use it effectively to communicate with membership and external audiences, and to influence organizing and contract campaigns. Strong media relations skills a must.

Responsibilities
The communication specialist will assist the communication director and team in all aspects of the organization’s communication and public/media relations efforts, including to:

  • Develop and execute effective messaging and framing strategies that will advance campaign goals and help achieve bigger wins
  • Develop materials, printed and digital, which elevate OPEIU’s voice and credibility for our campaigns
  • Assist with the writing and editing of collateral materials, correspondences and the union’s publications, including its quarterly membership magazine, White Collar
  • Contribute content for and manage development of the union’s websites and mobile app
  • Create new and compelling content for the organization’s social media networks, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat
  • Support the organizing and bargaining departments with the creation and development of effective campaign flyers and other materials
  • Assist in conceptualizing and drafting editorials, speeches and position papers
  • Help manage media relations activities, including the drafting of press releases, leadership statements, fact sheets, etc. to tout accomplishments and initiatives. Raise OPEIU leaderships’ profiles through the development of opinion pieces, white papers, blog posts, etc.
  • Compile web, email and social networking analytics into reports
  • Assist with membership data collection and management, and utilize Mobile Commons and Action Network platforms to help communicate with members
  • Assist with membership survey development to collect demographic information, gauge interest in union initiatives and benefits, test messaging, and support organizing and contract efforts
  • Assist in the planning and execution of conferences and conventions

Qualifications and Requirements

  • The ideal candidate would possess strong writing ability to assist with the drafting of White Collar articles, campaign flyers, postings, postcards, leaflets, stickers and other materials for organizing and bargaining campaigns, presentation materials and other OPEIU projects
  • A deep commitment to social, economic, racial and environmental justice and know how to activate communication strategies for bigger campaign wins that improve the lives of working families
  • Graduation from accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communication or related field
  • At least 3-5 years’ experience working in a communication role at a labor union, political campaign, advocacy or membership organization
  • Knowledge, experience with labor issues, organizing and political action a plus
  • Social media skills and familiarity with Action Network or similar
  • Event planning experience
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with and understanding of how to effectively utilize social media to position OPEIU and to support issue, political, organizing and other campaigns
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong editing and proofreading ability
  • Experience in video production, video editing and photography a plus
  • Ability to coordinate multiple ongoing projects
  • Detail and deadline oriented
