Job Summary

The primary function of this position is to serve as a leader and manager of the Union Veterans Council, AFL-CIO (UVC). This person will guide the UVC to achieve its mission of bringing together working class veterans to promote issues that benefit veterans and our families in government affairs and public policy.

Essential Functions

  • Conceptualize, develop, and implement the strategic plan for the UVC mission including the establishment of specific goals and metrics for this plan, as well as the strategies and tactics needed
    • Identify and implement strategic public policy goals
    • Develop and implement concrete action plans
    • Continuously review and evaluate such plans for effectiveness; revise as needed to ensure success
  • Identify and implement best practices for growing participation in the UVC, inside and outside of the labor movement
  • Identify public policy and candidates and how veterans are impacted
  • Build alliances and coalitions with other veterans’ groups
  • Manage day-to-day affairs of the UVC and serve as the chief spokesperson and primary representative for all official functions and public events
  • Coordinate major decisions with the UVC board chair; prepare period reports for the UVC board, executive committee, and staff
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience of a progressively greater responsibility in a project management role
  • Extensive experience working with a broad array of organizations in a coalitional or alliance formation to support issues that positively impact veterans
  • Proven ability to develop strategy and implement programs
  • Experience working in the labor movement and its leadership on a national, state, and local level
  • Knowledge and understanding of the basic principles and skills involved in internal organization, development, and program planning and implementation
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication, presentation, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and political sensitive relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Proven ability to lead by example and foster mentoring relationships
  • Strong focus on detail
  • Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks
  • High level of individual motivation and proven self-starter
  • Computer proficiency is required
  • Ability to travel and perform evening and weekend work
