Job Description:

This is a full-time project-based position to work on organizing campaigns located in Northern Michigan. Organizers are responsible for a variety of aspects of a campaign including building relationships with workers, assessing workers, building lists, mapping worksites, identifying and developing worker-leaders and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists. Be able to perform work site and home visits. Experience in healthcare union organizing is preferred.

Qualifications:

  • Willing to work long and irregular hours.
  • Be in possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license.
  • Have strong communications skills, both verbal and written.
  • Be motivated, responsible, organized, professional and detail-oriented.
  • Be able to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from the campaign Lead.
  • Conducts one-on- one organizing through meetings and home visits to accurately assess and recruit supporters and leaders.
  • Works with workers to develop a representative organizing committees, and trains and deploys them to move the campaign.
  • Writes turf plans to implement the overall organizing campaign and goals, while develops and implements strategies to counter anti-union campaigns.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Experienced in community, student, labor, or environmental activism is a plus.
  • Being a skilled and experienced organizer, ideally with 2-3 years of organizing experience in the labor movement, particularly in healthcare is desirable.

Summary of duties and responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of union organizing practice and principles.
  • Basic knowledge of labor laws, especially with respect to union organizing.
  • Attend regular meetings with supervisors and teams to discuss progress and plan activities.
  • Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a regular basis.
  • Take direction on activities to develop campaign and accomplish goals.
  • Driving, travel, temporary assignments and extended work hours are required.
