Executive Director – Institute of Integrated Education : New York

United Federation of Teachers
A Union of Professionals

Executive Director
Institute of Integrated Education

New York City, NY

Background:
The United Federation of Teachers (UFT) is deeply committed to public education and is dedicated to the concept that strong schools equal strong communities, and vice versa. Consistent with that philosophy, in 2012 the UFT initiated a project to create community learning schools—schools which address the needs of the student outside of the classroom, including providing family and behavioral health counseling, healthcare and nutrition, and other supportive services—allowing students to focus on learning. The program’s success is measured in higher test scores and improved graduation rates than for the same population in other similar schools. With the full support of the teachers, the project has brought about more engaged students and families in the conversation about what their communities require to improve learning. The program is now in 28 schools, serving over 16,000 students daily, and has a goal to expand this program to more and more schools until every community’s needs have been met.

Building on the success of the community learning schools initiative in New York City, the UFT is now looking to bring the program statewide by creating and implementing a framework which will bring communities, parents, educators and social service providers together—a framework that will offer the flexibility of addressing individual community needs while maintaining and ultimately improving educational standards. This work will be done by a new nonprofit organization sponsored by the UFT, tentatively named the Institute of Integrated Education (the Institute), which will work with the community learning schools, the UFT, thought leaders, and other stakeholders to develop this structure as well as create the blueprint to get the program adopted throughout New York as the new standard.

The plan is for the Institute to be a fully independent nonprofit, with its own Board of Directors and its own funding streams. The UFT will provide workspace and back-office support until the appropriate staff can be funded and hired. The Institute will also work hand-in-hand with the Community Learning Schools organization in order to communicate the metrics, best practices and knowledge to policy makers in government, the nonprofit community, and the education community. The ultimate goal is to create a state-wide model with the potential for national implementation.

The Position
The UFT is seeking a highly intelligent and gifted nonprofit leader to become the first Executive Director of the Institute of Integrated Education. He/she will serve as the face of the organization and its main advocate, the lead fundraiser, the strategic planner, and the key executive building and managing the organization and its day-to-day operations. The Executive Director must have a strong commitment to the concept of community learning schools, be able to translate their successes to the donor community, and be skilled in working with the full range of potential donors, from large corporations and foundations to individual donors.

The Executive Director will be responsible for all aspects of organizational management, including hiring and handling all related staff matters, developing and implementing programs, and evaluation and dissemination as appropriate. Financial management of the organization will be a critical role for the incoming ED, who will need to develop, review and oversee budget and all fiscal decisions along with the Board of Directors.

The successful candidate will need to have experience in fundraising from public and private sources, with a particular emphasis on foundations. He or she will develop and maintain strong relationships with key funders and coordinate all fundraising events. Public relations and outreach to increase the public’s awareness of the work of the organization will also be a priority. He or she will represent the Institute and be the primary spokesperson for the organization. While a background in education is not essential, knowledge of the needs of underserved students and communities is a plus.

The UFT is seeking an individual with extraordinary leadership skills who has the ability to work well with others, particularly the Board of Directors and the leadership and staff at the UFT. He or she must be a hands-on manager, demonstrate a bold and innovative approach to fundraising and be a quick study of future opportunities. He or she must possess exceptional communication and writing skills, solid judgment, and have the passion to be the founding head of an extraordinary not-for-profit where the growth opportunities are endless.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the main face of the organization, collaborating with and supporting the Board of Directors to strategize on organizational goals.
  • Increase the visibility and understanding of the work and mission of the Institute.
  • Manage and plan all fundraising and development activities including: special events, foundation and corporate asks, individual giving, and grant writing.
  • Create a plan for recruiting, hiring and developing staff.
  • Implement and oversee the growth and strategic management of the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; advanced degree strongly preferred
  • 5-10 years of increasingly responsible management experience in a relevant setting, preferably in the nonprofit community
  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills are critical
  • Hands-on management skills
  • Solid track record of fundraising among individual and major donors, foundations, corporations, and sponsors
  • Self-starter with a bright and diplomatic attitude while working with the highest level of personal integrity
  • A demonstrated record of success in strategic planning and problem solving
  • Entrepreneurial in spirit and ability to find innovative ways to grow a nonprofit organization
  • Knowledge as to how to develop relationships with key government agencies and related stake holders
  • Experience in sound management of finances of an organization of similar capacity and complexity

The UFT will offer a competitive salary for this position, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefit package is available. The position also includes vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays. The UFT seeks to hire staff which reflects the diversity of the communities they serve.
