Data Specialist
Organizing Campus Workers

Based in Atlanta, GA

Position Title: Data Specialist: Organizing Campus Workers
Salary Range: $59,144 – $83,336
Availability: Full-time
Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Start Date: December, 2019

Unions must have a cultural shift to meet the challenges our members, our movement, and our organizations face following the Supreme Court ruling on Janus. This demands a relentless organizing approach and militant mobilization, a fighting unionism. A new innovative project in CWA strives to be just that, organizing public higher education workers in right to work states without collective bargaining.

Organizing in a context without a contract forces our membership to think deeply and creatively about building power, whether it’s taking on the boss on the shop floor or “bargaining” for advances in the legislative arena. The Data Specialist’s role is to support member-driven campaigns through data management and strategic communications.

RESPONSIBILITIES include:

  • Data Management:
    • Provide data, targeting, and technological strategic guidance and analysis to support organizing and issue campaigns
    • Administer, support, and train users on PledgeUp and Action Network
    • Assist staff in developing strategies, data processes, and reporting to accurately measure progress toward organizing goals
    • Collect and manage employee lists and salary data through Freedom of Information Act requests and conduct basic descriptive analysis to inform organizing
    • Standardize data across external communications programs, internal organizing, and dues collection databases; interface and troubleshoot issues with database hosts
    • Work with staff to establish best practices and standards for data collection, acquisition, and preservation, including Google Drive document and folder maintenance

The ideal candidate would support digital communication efforts in the following ways:

  • Targeting guidance for social media and internet outreach for new organizing
  • Assist with website development and upkeep
  • Optimize online communications outreach through testing and analysis
  • Support development of peer-to-peer texting plan
  • Draft and disseminate surveys
  • Support strategic development of new content

Required Skills and Experience

  • BA or BS in a related field or at least 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Familiarity with tools such as PledgeUp, Action Network, Salsa, Catalist, VAN, and other constituent relationship management tools
  • Experience standardizing data from multiple sources
  • Ability to manage data for a large member- or donor- based organization
  • Experience with a programming language used for data analysis and manipulation such as Python, R, or SQL
  • Ability to train people with a range of skill sets on technical tools
  • Ability to apply flexibility and creative problem solving to enforce the necessary use of certain systems
  • Ability to continually develop skills related to use of rapidly changing technology and communications best practices
  • Experience in the use of data and analytics to drive effective decision-making in labor organizing, issue, and/or electoral organizing
  • Strong commitment to social justice and the labor movement
  • Previous union or community organizing experience and/or understanding of labor organizing practices or strategic campaigning
  • Ability to work on a solid team, as well as take individual initiative with minimal supervision
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical subjects to non-technical individuals
  • Effective time management skills, including demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects at the same time
  • Ability to work long and extended hours when needed

We especially encourage applications from people who have these additional skills:

  • Experience with relational databases
  • Proficiency in additional language(s) for data analysis such as SQL, Python, or R
  • Experience working with APIs
  • Experience with web data extraction
