AGMA Eastern Business Representative

Based in New York City, NY or Washington DC</span>

American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) is a labor organization that represents the people who create and present America’s operatic, choral and dance performances across the world. AGMA represent approximately 7,500 singers, dancers, performers and production personnel at all principal opera houses, ballet and modern dance companies in the United States. The Union provides forceful advocacy and defense of its members’ employment and artistic rights and is affiliated with the AFL-CIO Branch of Associated Actors and Artists of America.

Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Organizing and Outreach and assigned negotiating staff, the Eastern Business Representative is responsible for implementing campaigns and procedures to strengthen AGMA, including internal organizing; new member orientations; member education; and coordinated contract campaigns. The Business Representative will assist Negotiators, negotiating committees and Local Leadership in the preparation of proposals, meetings and events to support ongoing internal and external organizing, education, negotiations and contract enforcement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct internal and external organizing campaigns.
  • Present new member orientations at assigned companies.
  • Conduct delegate training and leadership development at assigned companies.
  • Conduct committee and membership meetings at assigned companies.
  • Provide support to the Negotiating Committees and related labor-management committees.
  • Assist Senior Staff in preparing for and conducting negotiations, including conducting research and drafting proposals.
  • Assist Senior Staff in contract enforcement.
  • Work with Senior Staff in the development and implementation of various campaigns.
  • Provide support to Area Committees.
  • Conduct outreach and education to members.
  • Help facilitate public/political relations and attend related events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Two or more years of related work experience.
  • Knowledge of labor unions and labor relations issues in the public and private sector.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate and work with a variety of personalities.
  • Strong research and analytical skills necessary to assess and plan effective projects.
  • Ability to deal with conflicting and changing priorities.
