Departmental Overview
The Center for Labor Research and Education (Labor Center) at the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) conducts research and education on issues related to labor and employment. The Labor Center’s curricula and leadership trainings serve to educate a diverse new generation of labor leaders. The Labor Center carries out research on topics such as job quality and workforce development issues, and we work with unions, government, and employers to develop innovative policy perspectives and programs. We also provide an important source of research and information on unions and the changing workforce for students, scholars, policymakers and the public.

Responsibilities
Involves designing, conducting, promoting, and supporting the Labor Center’s Leadership Development programs, including teaching classes and providing technical assistance and mentorship to partner organizations. Researches and assesses educational needs and interests for targeted public segments, and develops programs, materials, technology and learning approaches accordingly.

  • Plans and develops new programs and curriculum, and adjusts existing courses and curriculum in a continuing education environment.
  • Actively participates in long-range strategic planning for public educational programs. Plans and schedules course offerings, identifies course topics. Evaluates prospective program partnerships. Participates in developing strategic market plans and target audiences.
  • Serves as lead instructor for course offerings.
  • Recruits, selects, orients, evaluates and supervises qualified course and program instructors/guest presenters with field expertise, as needed. Determines instructor objectives, methods of instruction and locations. Provides training or mentoring to instructors.
  • Evaluates and adjusts course curriculum through student/participant evaluations and level of interest shown.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with partner organizations whose staff and members are served by our courses.
  • Provides technical assistance and mentorship to labor and community partners.
  • Tracks student or participant performance and course desirability. Develops and maintains effective relationships with alumni and identifies ways for them to contribute to the success of future courses (help recruit future participants, identify future course offerings, serve as guest presenter/instructor, become a donor etc.).
  • Develops, prepares and reconciles budget for programs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Continuing education in related field required.
  • Thorough knowledge of labor organizations in California their current work and challenges they are facing to improve working conditions for Californians.
  • Advanced analytical skills to conduct needs assessment and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Thorough and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of labor history and history of social movements.
  • Skillful trainer/facilitator with deep knowledge of popular education. Is able to develop effective curriculum that is accessible to participants with different learning styles.
  • Skillful at working with a diversity of people and proven track record in leading teams to successfully implement program goals.
  • Effective leader who respects and is respected by others.
  • Excels at building and sustaining effective working relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders in labor, community organizations, labor education institutions.
  • Knowledge or ability to learn and comply with campus policies and procedures.
  • Excels at project management.
  • Thorough knowledge of current public educational programs and trends.
  • Thorough skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new presentations/courses to meet our organizational needs.
  • Solid understanding of emerging needs and strategies that partners are employing and adjusting curriculum or course offerings as needed.
  • Demonstrates good judgement in dealing with delicate information and/or conflicts that could impact program goals being met.
  • Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
