and Westchester County, NY areas

The New England Joint Board, UNITE HERE, is the affiliate of UNITE HERE in the six New England states and New York, representing workers in the manufacturing, warehousing, laundry, food service, disability service, textile, and garment industries. Included in our membership are workers from UNITE HERE predecessor unions ILGWU, ACTWU and UNITE as well as members originally organized under the UNITE HERE banner. We are a bold progressive union at the forefront of the movement for economic and social justice. Women and immigrants make up a majority of our membership.

Responsibilities
The Business Agent/Organizer is responsible for contract enforcement, direct member representation, and executing organizing and issue-based worksite campaigns at the Union’s worksites in the New York City, Long Island, and Westchester County areas. The Business Agent/Organizer reports to the Joint Board Manager. The Business Agent/Organizer will:

  • Represent union members before management in grievance meetings, investigatory interviews, and disciplinary meetings;
  • Assist in and prepare for contract negotiations;
  • Plan and conduct issue-based worksite campaigns;
  • Identify and recruit rank and file union leaders;
  • Plan and lead meetings;
  • Develop and maintain consistent campaign themes, messaging, and raps;
  • Develop and execute political and community outreach strategies;
  • Evaluate, plan, and conduct new organizing campaigns.

Qualifications
The New England Joint Board is interested in developing future leaders of the labor movement. Applicants demonstrating a strong willingness to learn and grow are encouraged to apply.

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice;
  • Familiarity with NLRB policies and procedures;
  • Experience with and the ability to quickly learn:
  • labor negotiations (preferably, chief spokesperson), contract language construction
  • labor contract grievance procedures
  • mobilizing and organizing diverse groups of workers
  • identifying and developing rank and file leadership
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing;
  • Thorough attention to details;
  • Ability to analyze complicated situations and quickly develop an action plan to achieve results;
  • Ability to multitask, work efficiently, be well organized and reliable;
  • Willingness to work long hours, often on short (or immediate) notice;
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining and commitment and adherence to the goals and mission of the organization;
  • Valid driver’s license and available to travel across the region;
  • Bilingual proficiency is preferred.
