Organizing Apprentice for ACTION! Organizing Project

The ACTION! Project of the AFL-CIO is for individuals interested in a career working for social justice as a Union Organizer, particularly with immigrant workers. Selected applicants will be on the front lines of the Los Angeles County labor movement’s efforts to engage immigrant workers to organize for better workplace conditions.

This is a 1 year, full-time paid Organizing Apprenticeship Program designed to identify and develop the skills necessary to be an effective labor organizer. These skills will be developed working on actual worker organizing campaigns involving immigrant workers in the Los Angeles County area. This Program will be run in coordination with Los Angeles labor unions to develop new organizers for ongoing and upcoming campaigns.
Participants will learn to work in a team, develop union and community organizing skills, and become engaged in social justice work. Organizers will be talking directly, one-on-one, with low wage workers about their rights.

Candidates
The Organizing Training Program is seeking candidates from union rank and file members, universities and community colleges, and community organizations and activists. Spanish language skills are required. Student, labor or immigrant rights organizing experience is a plus but not required; training will be provided. Potential organizers must submit an application and be interviewed to be considered.

Three-Day Organizing Workshop
Individuals will be invited to participate in a free, three-day training program.  These training will introduce the basics of one-on-one communication and union organizing.  Experienced union organizers conduct the training, provide feedback to participants and share experiences of what it is like to be a union organizer.  Participants who show potential to be effective union organizers will be invited to a two-week field organizing training.

Two-Week Field Organizing Training
Successful candidates will participate in a paid, two-week field organizing training where they will conduct house calls, visit work sites, and engage in public actions on Los Angeles organizing campaigns. The trainees will also be provided classroom workshops.

Organizer Apprenticeship
The next step in the organizer-training program is a 1 year paid apprenticeship organizing training $620 per week. The apprentices will work full time on an actual union organizing campaign where they will receive ongoing field and classroom training, and mentoring from experienced lead organizers. Apprentices will receive regular feedback and evaluation during this time. A weekly stipend transportation expenses of $210 will be provided. Must have a valid driver’s license and insured vehicle. A Certificate will be awarded to each successful apprentice upon completion of the program.
