Community Organizer

Position can be based in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, or Tennessee
The Ironworkers Union is hiring a Community Organizer dedicated to fighting for social and economic justice, and to drive up standards for all. Our campaigns are primarily among low wage and immigrant construction workers toiling away in unsafe working conditions, with little or no access to health care, and few rights on the job site. We are committed to raising worker’s dignity beyond the worksite and build community relations and cement our reputation as a force for justice.
The community organizer will lead our efforts to build relationships with activists, community allies, religious leaders, political leaders, and others committed to advancing the rights of workers. The community organizer will work with our coalition to conduct high profile actions and public outreach to important stakeholders and raise a spotlight on exploitative conditions in our industry. The community organizer will support worker organizers on an as needed including house calls and jobsite visits. Some field-based research may also be required.
The position requires frequent, extended travel.
Community organizer responsibilities include:
- Implement plans to mobilize community, political allies, and union members to support strategic goals.
- Build collaboration between labor, faith, and community stakeholders for organizing and issue campaigns.
- Support the direction of the organizing plan and strategy
- Work with our coalition to increase visibility for issues.
- Plan and execute large-scale mobilizations
- Act as a representative in meetings, hearings, events, and before the public,
- Promote organizing campaigns to congregations and members
- Track the national landscape related to community organizing, including development of best practices identified by other organizations and allies in the labor, faith, and civil rights arena.
- Maintain information about actions and related events.
- Build relationship with various media outlets and conduct media outreach and respond to media inquiries.
- Support worker organizing by conducting house calls, jobsite visits and other outreach as needed.
- Support field-based research by compiling and analyzing information on local leaders, companies, industries and issues as needed, and
- Prepare informational resources and documents for public use.
Required Skills – applicants must have the following:
- Existing relationships with grassroots organizations in the region
- Substantive experience doing organizing and outreach for social justice
- At least two years-experience working in community, labor, or faith-based organizing is preferred
- Strong oral and written communication skills, especially around facilitation, planning, and reporting
- Willingness and flexibility to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends
- Access to a car and valid driver’s license and insurance
- Capacity to work both independently and part of a team
- Writing and speaking fluency in more than one language, preferably Spanish
- Frequent travel away from home is required.
