POSITION DESCRIPTION
I. POSITION TITLE: ORGANIZER
II. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Organizer is responsible for developing well organized alliances of educators, parents, students and community leaders that can effectively advocate for a public education system that meets the unique needs of all students. The organizer is also responsible for facilitating conversations, gathering data, and building/mobilizing broad public support for schools driven by parent and educator engagement.
III. EXPECTATIONS OF ORGANIZER:
- Effective and fluent when communicating in English and a secondary language spoken in Bridgeport is preferred (Spanish, Creole, French, etc.)
- Effective communicating in professional settings such as schools, organizations, and governmental and non-governmental entities
- Effective communicating in community settings, with parents of school children and other residents of the community
- Effective speaking to large groups and audiences informally and in more formal settings such as public hearings and forums
- Effective in being a professional, courteous, and respectful representative of the project to all stakeholders
- Self-directed, motivated, and able to plan and carry-out ongoing daily activities consistent with the project
- Understand and navigate neighborhood and city-wide political environments
IV. GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Read, understand, and dutifully carry-out the provisions of the underlying grant proposal and its required deliverables
- Coordinate partners in pursuing a positive, supportive, and unified vision of public schools
- Meet with educators, parents, and other groups to develop a shared vision in the mission of local public schools; continually engage educators and parents in the coalition’s priorities
- Organize attendance of community meetings and forums with parents and other community members to discuss a vision for public schools
- Develop expertise on comprehensive community school strategic plan and present and engage varying audiences
- Develop relationships with school, district, and city leaders and introduce the work of the project
- Develop and implement a plan for engaging community service agencies and non-profits in the project.
- Organize local political advocacy on coalition priorities
- Prepare timely reports on coalition priorities and deliverables
- Be able and willing to travel to various locations across the city/county to meet with potential partners and deliver informational sessions. Some light lifting may be required for meetings.
V. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Fluency in English and a secondary language is preferred (Spanish, Creole, French, etc.)
- Successful experience conducting presentations, meetings, and facilitating smaller group work
- Deep knowledge of NEA Six Pillars for Successful, Effective Community Schools
- Knowledge of how to implement, monitor, and evaluate change in schools using data collection and data driven decision making processes
- Ability to communicate clearly in oral and written forms, especially with groups of adults
- Ability to effectively integrate technology, including social media, into organizing campaigns
- Demonstrated ability to work in groups and alone, to initiate and follow through on assignments, and meet deadlines
- Evidence of the ability to present large and complex issues in succinct, highly readable documents
VI. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required, with the possibility to waive such requirement with extensive successful relevant experience.
VII. COMPENSATION AND DURATION
This is a grant-funded position paying $3,800 per month for 13 months, with the possibility for extension.
