Northern California Staff Director

SEIU-USWW seek is current seeking candidates for the position of Northern California Regional Staff Director working out of our Oakland and San Jose Offices.

Responsibilities:
The Northern California Staff Director will lead a staff team of coordinators and lead organizers, who lead staff (organizers, communicators, researchers and community/political organizers) in the planning and execution of an overall strategic plan to organize our members and member leaders around the program and vision of the Union and to organize both organized and unorganized workers in industry sectors within the union’s jurisdiction. The candidate must be able to work effectively with the Local’s executive leadership team, executive board, staff, and member organizers to develop and implement internal and external organizing plans.

Examples of Duties:

• Develop and implement multiple strategic plans both internally and externally
• Supervise the work and development of senior staff including coordinators and lead organizers
• Work with the executive leadership team to align the organization with both internal and external organizing strategies
• Participate in the coordination of national external and internal organizing strategies to organize local, national, or international employees
• To develop new organizing strategies which seek to speed the pace or the breadth of the local’s organizing program
• Develop a vibrant and active member organizing program
• Where needed, serve as primary spokesperson in new campaigns with employers, clients, coalitions, the International union, and elected officials
• Identify and oversee implementation of legal, community and political strategies
• Oversee the development of a coordinated communications strategy during new organizing, contract, and fight back campaigns
• Promote the importance of organizing in the union, internally and externally
• Assist in creating and overseeing the implementation of internal organizing industry plan based on the local’s missions and goals
• Create and manage the department’s annual budget

A successful candidate will have:

• Commitment to building long-term power for working class people and creating a just and humane society
• Excellent strategic planning skills including ability to lead staff and members in campaign planning and implementation
• Proven ability to manage in a manner which inspires, motivates, develops, and maintains good working relations with diverse membership and staff
• Sophisticated knowledge of legal, political, economic, and industry forces that impact organizing campaigns; preferably including experience working with employers, attorneys, various employment agencies, elected, community groups, and other potential allies
• Proven capacity to build strong teams and develop lead organizers, organizers, and members
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write reports, make presentations, facilitate meetings, and conduct training
• Proven strong supervisory skills, including experience supervising other managers
• Excellent analytical and program planning skills
• Knowledge of labor laws relating to the private sector
• Experience with contract negotiations, fight backs

Requirements:

• Combined minimum experience of 7 years with internal and external organizing experience. Must include experience developing and leading internal and external organizing campaigns
• Minimum 5 years experience in supervising staff and members
• Valid California driver’s license, working automobile and valid auto insurance with minimum level of coverage required by staff union contract
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours and participate in all union wide activities
• Willingness to travel within the state as well as out of state for meetings, trainings, and assignments
