The Regional Communications Manager works with the regional EVP, VPs, organizers and other staff to produce communications strategies, budgets, plans, timelines and materials in order to advance the strategic goals of the region and win campaigns.
Reporting
The Regional Communications Manager reports to the Regional Executive Vice President and the union’s overall Communications Director. Guidance on immediate priorities, messaging and goals are provided by the regional EVP. Guidance on the organization’s branding, principles and best practices are provided by the Communications Director.
PRIMARY PURPOSE AND FUNCTION
Oversees, directs, and implements all aspects of 1199SEIU Massachusetts division’s integrated communications and new media operation to support the union’s priorities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBLITIES
- Advises and works with 1199SEIU MA Executive Vice President, officers and staff to develop union communications strategies and plans.
- Ensure the EVP, VPs and organizers in the local region are receiving the communications support and materials they need in a timely manner.
- Monitors the communications work of all staff to ensure high quality standards, best practices, and consistency of message throughout Massachusetts division across all platforms.
- Evaluates the objectives, promotional policies, and/or needs of the organization to develop and implement messaging strategies that will influence both internally and externally. Assess the union’s branding and strategic communications performance.
- Serves as a thought partner and strategist with 1199SEIU leadership and play a key role in shaping long term plans and growth trajectory.
- Plans, directs, and oversees work to develop 1199SEIU Massachusetts’ brand, and implementation of public messages through earned and paid media, social media, allies and public forums.
- Develop communications strategies, plans, budgets, timelines and messaging frames for the local region.
- Directs the design, preparation and editing of organizational publications for internal and external audiences, including magazines, newsletters, flyers, brochures, radio ads, paid media and other communication vehicles for the union.
- Evaluates, recommends, and implements changes to departmental structure as needed in order to deliver excellence in communications support to Massachusetts division and the said structure is aligned with the goals of the union. Align processes, resources-planning and department goals with overall strategy.
- Recruits, mentors, trains, oversees and regularly evaluates the communications staff and their developmental needs. In some instances, staff will be co-supervised with other division/department directors.
- Recommends the hiring of communications consultants, pollsters, freelancers, video and multi-media producers, design and production companies and advertising outlets and directs and monitors their work.
- Prepares, manages, and monitors departmental, communications programs, and communications portion of campaign budgets.
- Performs other duties as needed to support 1199SEIU Massachusetts’ goals and mission.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience with regional media market, Massachusetts Labor Movement, member, and provider community is preferred.
- A high level of judgment; ability to take initiative and work independently; ability to collaboratively work with elected 1199SEIU Massachusetts’ leaders, members, and staff in complex and sometimes sensitive political situations, always exercising a high level of professionalism.
- Must have a minimum of seven (7)years of experience in communications for a progressive political campaign, non-profit organization or Union.
- Understanding of and commitment to the Social Justice and Labor Movement.
- Proficiency in desktop publishing software, graphics or photo imaging software, Web page creation and editing software, and evaluates and recommends new and improved products.
- Experience in video creation and editing software and Web platform development software.
- Must thrive in an environment with tight deadlines, changing priorities, high-pressure and irregular hours.
- A demonstrated, deep commitment to the union movement and social justice causes.
- Excellent written, verbal and visual communications skills.
- A thorough understanding of the contemporary media landscape and current communications strategies and tactics.
- An understanding of current communications technology, including social media.
- Ensure that the brand of the union as the leading advocate for quality healthcare, good jobs and social justice is protected and advanced in the region.
