Organizing Director

AFSCME District Council 57 is a progressive, member driven labor organization dedicated to empowering and securing dignity and respect for all workers in California. In this current political climate, organizing workers is paramount to ensure that all workers have the opportunity to build a better tomorrow. The Organizing Department is responsible for internal and external organizing throughout the Council, which spans the entire state of California.

Council 57 represents over 30,000 public and private workers and is poised to grow despite unwavering attacks from all levels of government and the corporate world.

Resumes are currently being accepting for an Organizing Director position which will lead the department in devising internal organizing strategies and programs, as well as identifying and developing an aggressive and robust organizing operation throughout the state. Our goal is to grow by at least 5000 members in the next 2 to 3 years with the potential for much larger growth.

Primary Responsibilities:
The Organizing Director will be responsible for the following:

  • Creating an internal organizing program that will build on the work done over the last year through an aggressive AFSCME Strong plan (went from 79% to over 86% membership in one year)
  • Identify and organize external jurisdictions and employers throughout the state focusing on local jurisdictions in Northern California and State workers, as well as the non-profit and healthcare sectors
  • Lead a department of two organizers and occasional lost timers
  • Work with AFSCME International in a productive and results driven manner
  • Be highly visible in organizing campaigns, with significant work being performed in the field
  • Work with an executive team to ensure the Council grows in strategic and responsible ways
  • Produce high level communication pieces with the communications team to inoculate and energize our membership and workers in un-organized workplaces

Job Requirements/Qualifications

  • At least 5 years’ experience in a Director or Lead Organizer capacity
  • Experience directly managing staff with accountability being a central tenet of a successful department
  • Experience in creating and managing an organizing budget
  • Experience organizing large groups of workers, preferably in the 1,000 to 5,000 range (or larger)
  • Exemplary political and interpersonal relationship abilities
  • Up to date on the latest technology and strategies for organizing in the modern workplace
  • Willing to work long, irregular hours (including nights and weekends), as required for campaigns
  • Extensive travel as needed
  • Commitment to social change and carrying out the vision of the Executive Board and Executive Director for the Council
  • Ability to speak Spanish a plus
  • Valid driver’s license, insurance and an operational vehicle required.

Compensation:
Wages and benefits are extremely competitive. Pension, employer paid healthcare, vacation and sick leave are part of a robust package offered to Directors at Council 57. Details will be provided upon an offer of employment.
