The New England Health Care Employees Union, District 1199, SEIU is now hiring smart, motivated individuals with the demonstrated ability to lead a team of organizers to fight for better working conditions, dignity on the job, and quality health care for all.

Often called “my favorite union” by Martin Luther King Jr., District 1199 is a bold, democratic labor organization with a long militant, activist tradition. Over the past 40 years, we’ve used strategic campaigns and direct action to form unions, win better wages, benefits, a voice at work, and demand improvements for people in nursing homes, hospitals, state and community-based health care services and homecare.

We are the largest health care union in New England with more than 28,000 members, including doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, case managers, social workers, and direct care workers.  The majority of our members and organizers are women. Many are people of color, and/or immigrants. We are affiliated with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) – the largest and fastest-growing labor union in the country.

Union Membership Lead Organizers lead a team to organize members to build and exercise power in the workplace and  to advocate for better health care services.

Responsibilities:
Leads, trains, supervises, coordinates and develops a team of organizers in a given assignment within an industry sector

Works with organizers to

• understand and execute their role
• set priorities for work
• develop necessary skills
• identify and develop organizing strategies, plans, campaigns and programs
• identify and develop rank and file leaders
• develop team work

Examples of duties

• reports to Area Director (Vice President)
• accompanies organizer in field to model behavior, assess performance and provide feedback as necessary
• participates in and provides leadership in team meetings led by Area Director
• meets with organizers as a team and individually
• functions as point person with employers as necessary
• coordinates union program and activities for team
• troubleshoots for organizer and Area Director as necessary
• helps focus team resources for sector and union-wide activities

Qualifications:

• Demonstrated ability to develop and lead a team of union organizers
• Substantial union organizing experience
• Substantial knowledge of organizing principles and labor relations
