UniServ Unit Description
The Denver UniServ Unit (DUU) consists of three local unions: Denver Classroom Teachers Association (DCTA) for certified personnel, Denver Association of Educational Office Professionals (DAEOP) for non-certified office personnel, and DCTA-Retired. DUU represents approximately 3100 members. DCTA and DAEOP have comprehensive master agreements with the Denver Public Schools, an urban district of 90,000 students in more than 150 worksites.

The DUU office is located in the Colorado Education Association (CEA) headquarters building across the street from the State Capitol. The DUU office employs an Executive Director, three additional UniServ Directors, a UniServ Field Manager and two Associate Staff personnel. A Member Service Hot Line is utilized as a tool to meet basic member needs freeing UniServ staff to organize, recruit, and engage members, as well as advocate for individuals through grievance/legal processes.

Responsibilities:

• Engage in organizing and capacity building efforts with leaders, members and staff, community organizations and parents.
• Provide training for leaders and members to strengthen their organizing and advocacy skills
• Maintain a constant presence in member work sites to assist, engage, and organize members
• Assist local leaders and members with the development, implementation, and evaluation of campaigns, programs and activities that strengthen organizational capacity, accomplish the goals and objectives of the Unit and local, and coordinate with state and national programs.
• Provide primary and professional staff support to the leaders and members of the Unit
• Consult, advise and assist members regarding rights issues and legal assistance
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required General Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree
• Public education and union values
• Work experience in education associations; unions; other non-profit entities that organize and advocate for their constituents; or experience in local/state elected or appointed positions
• Strong leadership skills and professional attributes, including the ability to prioritize work; exercise sound professional judgment; build and maintain effective working relationships; effectively manage multiple priorities, time, and financial resources; and, think creatively
• Ability to work in a team environment
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills and effective listening skills
• Knowledge of organizing principles and ability to develop and implement organizing plans
• Ability to provide leadership in the areas of membership recruitment and organizational development
• Ability to organize around issues, including motivation and mobilization of volunteers
• Understanding of collective bargaining advocacy, including contract/legal issues
• Conflict resolution skills
• Project planning and management skills
• Training and presentation skills
• Understanding of membership-based organizations
• Willingness and ability to advocate for the membership and goals of the organization
• Interest/understanding of current education reform issues
• Willingness and ability to expand knowledge and skills in a rapidly changing environment
• Experience in using 21st century technologies including proficiency in social media

Preferred Additional Qualifications:

• Advanced degree
• Spanish proficiency
• Experience in teaching or other education employee positions
• Experience in delivering staff development in an educational setting

Salary and Fringe Benefits
DUU offers a starting salary of $54,404.71. Fringe benefits include vacation, sick, and personal leave; insurance; holidays; and defined contribution retirement benefit.
