
Temporary Political Organizer
Based in Forestville, MD
The primary responsibility for the PGCEA Political Organizer will be to recruit, train, and manage member volunteers to elect PGCEA endorsed pro-public education candidates in the 2018 election cycle. The person in this position will be the lead organizer to coordinate and implement multiple facets of a member-to-member campaign plan in support of recommended candidates in priority races across Prince George’s County. The PGCEA Political Organizer will serve as point person for developing and reaching field organizing goals in targeted campaigns. The successful candidate will be able to plan, manage, and execute multiple campaigns and projects simultaneously in a high pressure environment requiring rapid adjustment to changing priorities and strategies.
The four main roles of the PGCEA Political Organizer will be:
- Develop local campaign plan with appropriate local leaders and staff.
- Recruit, train, and manage volunteers and build Association Representative capacity.
- Interact and coordinate with recommended candidates and their staff.
- Track and report progress toward all organizing goals established in the campaign plan on a daily and weekly basis.
Plan Development
The PGCEA Political Organizer will develop and coordinate all plans and activities with local governance, relevant GR/organizing committees, and professional and administrative staff. Assistance, guidance, and support will be provided by the PGCEA Government Relations Liaison, Campaign 2018 team, Executive Director, and President.
- All plans must include organizing goals, awareness of priority campaigns, volunteer outreach plan, roles and responsibilities, budget, and timeline of activities. Plans will be updated throughout the campaign cycle to reflect changing campaign climates and progress to goals.
Volunteer Recruiting and Engagement
- PGCEA Political Organizer will coordinate and implement multiple facets of a member-to-member campaign plan in support of recommended candidates in priority races in assigned locals. The organizing goals include “organized people” goal of having 5% of our members participate in a phone bank or canvass shift; and “organized money” of increasing members who give to PAC via payroll deduction to 20% of all members.
With the direction and support of association staff and governance, the PGCEA Political Organizer will be expected to:
- Increase building representatives, team captains, and volunteer capacity in support of the campaign plan;
- Integrate PAC fundraising with volunteer organizing at association events, meetings, and building visits;
- Participate in and develop/facilitate trainings of staff, leaders, and members in support of campaign goals, including trainings on PAC fundraising, volunteer turnout, phone banking, and door-to-door canvassing;
- Serve as lead volunteer canvass and phone bank coordinator, that will include turf-cutting for canvasses, list and script development for phone banks, and training support for field programs;
- Mobilize, train, educate, and develop new member leaders and activists for legislative, community, and electoral activity;
- Organize/participate in phone banks, canvasses, local association meetings, and building visits developed as a part of the volunteer campaign plan and in support of priority campaigns;
- Empower members to build effective advocacy relationships with elected officials, community partners, and other stakeholders;
- Prepare and/or support the creation of member education materials;
- Training and supporting MSEA Grassroots Organizing Teams.
Campaign and Staff Interaction
- Outreach to recommended candidates and their staff in building coordinated campaign plans and meeting shared volunteer recruitment goals;
- Work with multiple levels of staff and members to develop goals and execute plans for member participation in lobby days, rallies, town hall meetings, elected official accountability activities, and GOTV activities;
- Provide staff support in member meetings, and the training of member leaders;
- Regularly coordinate work priorities with Government Relations Liaison and other staff members.
Tracking and Reporting Progress
- Track all measureable goals in VAN and other grassroots organizing tools;
- Participate in routine meetings (weekly at first; daily as we get later in the election cycle) to report on progress toward all measureable goals.
Requirements:
- Minimum of two years of legislative, political organizing, or campaign experience with a labor union, state or local agency or association, non-profit community organization, or progressive elected official;
- Superior written and oral communication skills;
- Strong interpersonal skills, experience meeting deadlines, and the ability to manage many tasks simultaneously;
- Ability to design and implement effective political programs;
- Be self-motivated and willing to work long hours (including nights and weekends as needed);
- Proven ability to work and communicate with diverse communities, local leaders, staff colleagues, association members, community stakeholders, endorsed candidates, and campaign staff;
- Self-motivated, great attitude, and a strong team player;
- Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision;
- Working knowledge / familiarity with VAN, social media, and other online organizing platforms;
- Thorough knowledge of MS Office programs;
- Strong sense of professionalism and integrity;
- Experience with social media campaigns is highly desired;
- Experience with education issues and concerns highly desired;
- A good sense of humor, flexible and positive attitude, open mind and a strong interest in and commitment to building member-driven, independent political power are musts;
- Must own a reliable personal vehicle and possess a clean driver’s license.
