Reports to: Communications and Marketing Manager

Description: Included in the Staff Union Bargaining Unit (classified in the Program II or Senior Program II schedule) this is a full-time, salaried, overtime-exempt position.

Location: Based out of SEIU 775 HQ (Seattle)

Summary: As an SEIU 775 Communications Specialist, you will be an integral member of our fast-paced Communications and Marketing Team. SEIU 775 is a 21st-century union committed to communicating with our membership. The person in this position will be a member of the team charged with developing and maintaining digital outreach to members, crafting messaging, and strategizing on tactics for message dissemination. This position is public-facing, and media-relations experience is required.

Principal duties and responsibilities include: Use innovative strategies to communicate with home care, nursing-home workers, and caregivers across Washington and Montanta, while building public awareness and support for issues important to SEIU 775 members.

• Develop messaging and produce communications for member engagement, public awareness, bargaining, and legislative and political campaigns
• Develop and maintain media relationships
• Write creative copy for a wide variety of platforms including, emails, social media, fact sheets, talking points, op-eds, and letters to the editor
• Provide creative and accurate editing of all copy produced by other staff or SEIU 775 leaders

Required Job Qualifications:

• At least three to five years of experience in communications, marketing and/or organizing communications position
• Willingness to work long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, plus occasional travel
• A commitment to building a 21st-century union movement, to risk-taking, and to the mission, vision, and values of SEIU 775
• Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds/cultures, a willingness to innovate, and the ability to work independently as well as on a team
• Keep accurate written and digital records of contacts and assessments
• Experience project managing across teams, vendors and communications platforms
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
• Computer literacy and a willingness and ability to learn the organization’s technology tools
• Strong motivation, and personal-planning and time-management skills
• The ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment

Preferred Job Qualifications:

• Project-management experience
• Graphic-design ability
• Experience working under tight deadlines
• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a communications-related field

Typical Working Conditions
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, requirements include:

• Regularly operate a computer, a cell phone, and other general office equipment
• Occasionally walk from door to door for 3 hours at a time with rest and meal breaks
• Stand, walk, and sit for hours at a time
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds
• Sometimes work irregular hours to prepare for and attend events and union activities
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can elevate during events and campaign activities
• A regular work week can be 8 hours a day 5 days a week
• Occasionally, when we have major events to plan for, you must be able to work every day for 2 weeks

Compensation: Staff union pay scale ranges from $54,500 to $72,600, based on experience.
