California Economic Justice Campaign Coordinator

The National Employment Law Project seeks a dynamic and creative California Economic Justice Campaign Coordinator to help NELP plan and execute campaigns to transform the role and rewards of work in California’s economy. Our vision for an inclusive economy in California includes building a culture of compliance with labor standards and developing a progressive agenda for California’s low-wage and immigrant working people. Working in partnership with other NELP staff and our network of allies in California and around the country, the California Economic Justice Campaign Coordinator will help to ensure that California’s leadership on worker’s rights translates into improved economic opportunity and security through work for all working people and particularly for immigrant workers, women, and people of color throughout California.

NELP is a national non-profit with offices in New York, Washington D.C., Seattle and Berkeley. NELP promotes federal, state and local policies to create good jobs, strengthen workers’ upward mobility, enforce worker rights, and improve benefits and services for the unemployed. In collaboration with national and grassroots partners, NELP advances its work through research, advocacy, litigation support, technical assistance and strategic communications designed to raise wages, end wage theft and workplace violations, improve workplace safety and health, strengthen employee benefits and social insurance programs, ensure employer accountability for all workers – including workers in contract and on-demand employment, encourage fair chance hiring practices, and promote a comprehensive policy framework to build a good jobs economy. NELP works from the ground up to build change, in close partnership with community groups, unions, faith-based organizations, legal services programs and policymakers.

Job Responsibilities
The California Economic Justice Campaign Coordinator, based in NELP’s Berkeley, California office, is responsible for the following:

  • In collaboration with NELP’s partners, developing and carrying out strategies to achieve a culture of compliance with labor standards in California, including testing innovative consumer and employer engagement strategies, and exploring how culture and narrative change can address the widespread problem of wage theft;
  • Supporting a statewide collaborative of worker centers and the labor standards enforcement efforts of these and other allied organizations, as well as state and local agency officials;
  • Developing policies and executing campaigns with economic justice organizations and worker centers in California;
  • Drafting op-eds, blogs, reports, talking points, testimony and other campaign material;
  • Expanding relationships with NELP’s network of policy and grassroots organizations and worker centers in California, and supporting their involvement in NELP’s core issues and priorities;
  • Strengthening NELP’s efforts to build worker power in low-wage sectors, among immigrant workers, and across the economy;
  • Representing NELP in coalitions and community events, the media, and public forums; and
  • Contributing to NELP’s fundraising, grant proposals, project reports, and developing content for NELP’s newsletters and website.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience coordinating or supporting progressive policy campaigns, including experience working directly with worker centers, immigrant rights groups, labor unions, and other allied organizations;
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully working within or leading progressive coalitions, including experience working with social and economic justice organizations in California;
  • Strong foundation in worker rights, immigrant worker rights, economic and social justice issues and campaigns;
  • Commitment to and demonstrated ability to promote collaborative team dynamics, whether within internal organizational teams or within teams involving multiple organizations;
  • Strong organizational skills and effectiveness in balancing multiple expectations and demands;
  • Higher education and/or equivalent background and experience (in which research and data-analysis training and skills are a plus); and
  • Fluency in a language spoken by a large immigrant population in California, such as Spanish, Korean, or Chinese, is preferred.

Start date and compensation:
This position will be based out of our office in Berkeley, California. The position will start as soon as possible. Salary is competitive within the non-profit sector and commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits package. This position is in NELP’s bargaining unit, represented by National Organization of Legal Service Workers, UAW Local 2320. The position will require some travel.
