We are 50 congregations and other faith based organizations, intentionally bringing people together across the lines of race, faith, income level and neighborhood — lines which have historically kept us divided. We are people of faith committed to the work of bringing about justice here and now, in our city and our region. By strengthening and mobilizing our networks of relationships, we seek to exercise power in the public arena so that the needs and priorities of all people are reflected in the systems and policies that shape our region. PIIN employs the Congregations-Based Community Organizing Model and is a proud affiliate of the Gamaliel National Network an association of faith based organizations throughout the United States.
Purpose
PIIN is seeking a highly skilled, experienced, and dedicated Senior Lead Community Organizer to build and support teams of clergy and community leaders. Organizers teach community-organizing skills and empower grassroots leaders to conduct successful campaigns on a wide variety of issues.
The person hired will be responsible for helping PIIN grow and win on issues in the urban core and near suburbs of Allegheny County. We are looking for candidates that have the right combination of skills, emotional intelligence and a heart for improving the quality of life and broadening opportunities for all Pennsylvanians.
PIIN has a strong learning culture and places a high priority on personal development and relationship building. The ideal candidate would have a passion for social and economic justice, strong relational skills, and ability to bridge across differences. Strong written and verbal skills are required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Run major elements of the metro organization.
- Bring new congregations through the entire start-up organizing process
- Raise significant money for the organization.
- Mentor, train, and supervise other organizers.
- Initiate a campaign, train the leadership at a metropolitan issue level
- Provide regular organizing training for PIIN leaders and community members in the principles and strategies of congregation-based community organizing
- Support organizing teams in congregations in outreach, research, and strategic planning leading to large community action meetings that impact systemic change
SKILLS
- Ability and experience working with diverse faith communities, especially clergy
- Solid understanding of one’s own faith journey and a strong understanding of power
- Strong relational skills and ability to connect, engage, and inspire community members
- across religion, race, gender, age, language, class and experiences
- Capacity to think strategically and analytically about social, economic, cultural, and political
- issues affecting a community.
- A desire to learn, openness to challenge, and receptive to constructive criticism
- Ability to work as part of a strong staff team as well as independently
- Relevant previous organizing experience (Community, Labor, Voter) required
- Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
- Must have a current driver’s license; car preferred
