The Los Angeles Black Worker Center (LA BWC) is a growing organization at the forefront of the racial justice and worker rights movements in LA since 2011. The LA BWC is recognized as a national leader in the effort to address the challenges of the Black jobs crisis of unemployment and underemployment, and the growing inequity in the labor market. The LA BWC works toward economic justice in low-income communities of color by building power amongst Black workers and their communities to expand access to quality employment and promote public policies and corporate practices for sustainable economic development in South LA neighborhoods. The LA BWC strategies include a comprehensive approach of leadership development; political education and training; worker organizing; innovative policy advocacy; coalition building; and comprehensive direct action campaigns that integrates strategic research and communications. The Center also provides employment and legal services support.
Now in its seventh year, the LA BWC is currently seeking a Managing Director who can join the LA BWC team and lead the transformative campaign and base-building work that impact thousands of Black workers and the families who rely on them across the county.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Managing Director is responsible for:
- The day-to-day supervising of a 5+ team including communications, organizers, research, admin staff and volunteers.
- Designing and implementing comprehensive direct action campaigns grounded in fundamental organizing principles and LA BWC’s theory of social change, which is to center the leadership of those most impacted by the Black jobs crisis in the fight for change.
- Expand organization-wide capacity by implementing a training infrastructure to facilitate the development of staff’s and members’ capacity to fully engage in LA BWC’s organizing model rooted in rigorous outreach, leadership development, political education and direct actions campaigns.
- Cultivating coalitional relationships at the leadership and staff level with unions, community and political stakeholders while overseeing the coordination of coalitional activities.
- Developing budgets and working with executive team members to carrying out fundraising strategies including compiling reports to support routine evaluation, proposal writing and reporting associated with fundraising and grant management.
QUALIFICATIONS
- BA degree preferred
- Ideally has worked 3+ years in a management position in a complex, socially responsible nonprofit organization with demonstrated management skills including supervising and mentoring diverse mix of organizers and volunteers.
- Able to translate multi-faceted campaign and organizing strategies into clear and focused timelines, workplans, deliverables, and assignments that lead to productive outcomes and advances organizational goals in timely, high-quality, and effective manner.
- Demonstrates organizational skills and facility with independently managing project development and implementation in a fast-paced environment with limited resources.
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of the fundamentals of organizing principles and tools including, power analysis, science of numbers, leadership development, outreach recruitment etc.
- Excellent judgment, problem-solving, analytic, written and oral communications skills. Ability to articulate the values, culture, and strategies of LA BWC’s work and represent the organization to external supportive and hostile audiences.
- Superior interpersonal skills needed to engage and influence peers and staff while building authentic relationships of trust and respect with members and diverse work teams.
- Must be able to work irregular hours.
- Must have a car, drivers’ license and willingness to travel.
- This position reports to the Executive Director and is a member of the executive leadership team.
COMPENSATION
LA BWC offers a competitive compensation package including salary, health, 401k and vacation benefits; salary and benefits are commensurate with experience and the personnel structure of the LA BWC.
