Organizer

Based in either Madison or Milwaukee, WI

AFSCME Wisconsin Council 32 is currently seeking candidates for an Organizer position. The position will be based either in Madison or Milwaukee.

PRIMARY FUNCTION
This position is responsible for building and strengthening Council 32’s membership base by conducting organizing, electoral, and advocacy campaigns in the public and private sectors.

JOB DUTIES
The duties of this position include but are not limited to:

• Working under the direction of the Executive Director (or designee) and in cooperation with the Executive Board to implement an overall strategic plan to effectively organize and mobilize existing and potential members within Council 32’s jurisdiction;
• Identifying organizing targets within Council 32’s jurisdiction and actively working to develop contacts within such units;
• Following up on all organizing leads communicated by Council staff, executive board members, local union officers/members, members of other labor organizations or other sources;
• Handling unit determination (election) hearings before the WERC or NLRB;
• Performing the full range of activities necessary to conduct successful campaigns, including preparation of mailings and flyers, leafleting, building and coordinating the activities of internal organizing committees, scheduling and conducting mass meetings, and conducting home visits;
• Training volunteer member organizers and/or lost timers and coordinating their activities in campaigns;
• Identifying and recruiting new PEOPLE members and actively working to increase overall PEOPLE participation;
• Coordinating with and assisting the Council’s PEOPLE Committee and County PEOPLE Chairs.
• Managing data for relevant campaigns in the AFSCME VAN, including cutting lists and turf and ensuring the new information is posted to the AFSCME VAN in a timely fashion.
• In extenuating circumstances, may fill the various servicing roles of the Organizer/Field Representative.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

• A basic understanding of unionism, labor law and electoral law;
• Knowledge of the structure, functions, and personnel policies of local government jurisdictions;
• Strong oral and written communication skills;
• Ability to exercise initiative and to function effectively under general supervision;
• Ability to organize and manage large volume of information and to operate an office;
• Ability to gather, analyze, and interpret complex data and information from a variety of sources;
• Ability to speak clearly, concisely, and persuasively to groups of people;
• Ability to prepare clear and concise written correspondence, flyers, reports, and briefs;
• Proven ability to work harmoniously with others and to maintain satisfactory relationships with others involved in the collective bargaining process and the public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School graduation is required. College graduation or college level course work in labor and industrial relations, economics, and related fields is desirable. An equivalent number of years of progressively more responsible union related work or other relevant organizing experience may be substituted for the college education factor.

COMMENTS
A great deal of traveling and night work is involved in this position. The applicant should be aware that the nature and duties of the position will require the incumbent to be away from his/her family, possibly for extended periods of time. The hours worked daily and weekly are unlimited, depending upon the demands of the campaigns in progress.

Salary and all other benefits are as defined by the collective bargaining agreement and Council 32.
