Union Overview
The Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) is a dynamic, democratic, progressive labor union representing writers of motion picture, television, radio and Internet programming, including news and documentaries. Founded in 1933, the Guild negotiates and administers contracts that protect the creative and economic rights of its members. It is involved in a wide range of programs that advance the interests of writers, and is active in public policy and legislative matters on the local, national, and international levels.

Job Description
The Representative/Organizer position is responsible for activating Guild members to support the WGAW’s key objectives and organizing potential members. The position reports to the Director of Member Organizing, but also works with other Guild departments to administer and enforce contracts, and support campaigns.

Essential Functions

• Articulate the Guild’s goals, and educate members and potential members about the Guild, contracts, organizing, and their labor rights
• Work with members and potential members and other WGAW staff to effectively expand the Guild’s coverage, enforce contracts and increase members’ leverage
• Plan and implement campaigns that support the Guild’s key objectives, supporting collective bargaining, internal and external organizing, contract enforcement, and public policy
• Strategize with members to develop and implement collective responses to work-related problems not addressed by current collective bargaining agreements
• Identify, recruit, develop and motivate member leaders; support member working groups; recruit and develop writer organizing committees
• Build and maintain meaningful relationships with strategic members and potential members
• Provide insights and regular reports to staff and Guild leaders about writers’ concerns, priorities, and work issues
• Represent the Guild at worksites, conferences, festivals, meetings and other places members and potential members congregate
• Work with writers to strengthen relationships with strategic unions, community groups, and advocacy organizations
• Other duties as required

Occupational Qualifications

• At least three years of experience representing and organizing professional and/or freelance employees. Candidates with more experience are highly encouraged to apply
• Experience with internal and external organizing campaigns
• Experience training members for activism and leadership a plus
• General knowledge of labor contract principles and labor law (especially NLRA) and ability to assimilate frame and communicate enforcement issues
• Excellent communication and public speaking skills a must
• Must be able to work with limited supervision, have superior discretion and regularly exercise independent judgment
• Must have excellent time management skills and ability to think and plan strategically
• Must have the ability to navigate complex political waters, including dealing with dynamic priorities
• Proficiency in MS Word and Excel
• Valid California driver’s license and reliable insured automobile for business use will be required
• Ability to travel and work weekends and evenings as required
• Knowledge of the entertainment industry and an appreciation for popular culture a plus

Compensation
The Representative/Organizer is a Los-Angeles-based full-time, exempt position with full benefits. The WGAW offers competitive salary commensurate with experience.
