Political and Community Organizer

Based out of SEIU 775 HQ in Seattle, WA

Reports to: Director of Public Affairs

Included in the Staff Union Bargaining Unit (classified in the Organizer or Senior Organizer schedule) this is a full-time, salaried, overtime-exempt position.

Location: Based out of SEIU 775 HQ (Seattle)

Summary: The political and community organizer helps to both coordinate SEIU 775’s engagement in political and advocacy campaigns, and to build and deepen our relationships with community organizations particularly those representing people of color, immigrants, and LGBTQ communities. Through this work, the organizer will advance the goals of SEIU 775 – lifting caregivers out of poverty, transforming health and long-term care, building strong and sustainable worker organizations, and reducing inequality and increasing prosperity for all working people.

Principal duties and responsibilities include:

  • Working with the public affairs staff to develop and implement political and advocacy strategies and campaigns
  • Supporting and at times leading the union’s work on issue campaigns at the local, state, and federal level, including coordinating member engagement, communications, and coalition work
  • Supporting and at times leading the union’s work on local, state, and federal election campaigns
  • Coordinating the union’s candidate interview and endorsement process, including developing candidate questionnaires and tracking candidate endorsements and contributions
  • Coordinating member engagement in candidate and ballot measure campaigns with the union’s leaders in action department. This includes coordinating member volunteer activity with candidates, coordinating ‘walk a day in my shoes activities’ and coordinating member turnout to events.
  • Coordinating political messaging and engagement strategies with the union’s member communications department.
  • Identifying and developing members for potential elected and appointed political or community positions
  • Representing the union in specific political and issue coalitions and tables
  • Coordinating the union’s investments in building strong community, civic, and political organizations
  • Coordinating member engagement with local or statewide community and civic organizations
  • Engaging with community organizations and leaders both to build support for SEIU 775’s goals and to learn about their issues and provide support with efforts where SEIU 775’s mission is aligned.

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds including those with different religious, ethnic, cultural, language, age, and ability backgrounds other than their own.
  • Ability to perform outreach and interact in groups with varying cultural norms and practices as a representative of SEIU 775
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team
  • Strong facilitation skills and the ability to steer a group towards collaborative action and decision-making while maintaining positive group dynamics Strong personal planning, motivation, problem-solving and time management skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment
  • Excellent verbal, written, and digital communications skills; ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences
  • At least three years’ experience in political and/or advocacy and community engagement work
  • Willingness to work long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Willingness and ability to travel, including frequent travel throughout WA and other locations, including overnight travel and assignments.
  • Computer literacy and a willingness and ability to learn the organization’s technology tools
  • Commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression values in the workplace and throughout the performance of all duties
  • A commitment to building a 21st-Century workers movement, to risk-taking, and to the mission, vision, and values of SEIU
  • Ability to read and write and communicate verbally in a language other than English highly desired

Compensation: Competitive salary scales are set by collective bargaining agreement, and range from $52,000 to $73,000; actual salary step depends on experience.
