UNI Global Union is seeking a Campaigns Director in its SCORE (Strategic Campaigns Organising Research & Education) Department. UNI SCORE has an ambitious program to improve working conditions for workers and to build union strength and organising capacity within UNI’s regions and sectors.
The successful candidate will work within UNI SCORE to support the organising and campaigns work in line with UNI’s Breaking Through Strategy. The Campaigns Director will report to the Head of UNI SCORE and work closely with the UNI regions and sectors on campaigns under their direction and with sectors at the regional level.
Responsibilities
The Campaigns Director will have the following responsibilities:
- To lead, where appropriate, and support the development and implementation of comprehensive campaign plans which focus on securing the right to organise multinational companies.
- Development of campaigns within UNI and its affiliates:
- Develop comprehensive campaign plans which may include shareholder, media, customers, client, political and regulatory strategies.
- Use, where appropriate, the OECD guidelines, and other international and national instruments to secure agreements from multinational companies to comply with international standards.
- Ensure that strategic campaigns are fully integrated with organising campaigns.
- Motivate affiliates to actively participate in campaigns.
- Assist UNI SCORE to share best practices and promote skills in organising and strategic campaigning among our affiliates.
- Develop campaigning skills within UNI sectors and with regional staff.
- The person will also work with the Head of UNI SCORE to support the implementation of campaigns and projects that are part of the UNI’s SSO (Solidarity Support Organisations) portfolio and the UNI Organising Fund.
- Be part of the UNI SCORE team securing a positive relationship with SSO’s and affiliates and responding to their needs and requests.
- Work with the Head of Department to maintain communications with affiliates and UNI staff implementing UNI Organising Fund and SSO projects.
- The Campaigns Director should have a proven record of success in leading campaigns and organising efforts in his or her union or in an international arena.
Competencies
The required competencies for the position of Campaigns Director include the following:
- A minimum of eight years’ experience in trade union campaigning and organising.
- Direct experience in management of comprehensive campaigns to win rights, including in an environment where companies are vigorously opposed to trade unions.
- Experience in dealing with NGO’s, Government agencies and major corporations.
- International experience or exposure to the industrial relations schemes of multiple countries.
- Direct involvement in the work with multinational companies is desirable.
- A strong personal commitment to the ideals and goals of UNI SCORE and UNI Global Union.
- Willingness to engage in hands on work and ability to adapt to irregular and unusual hours and strenuous travel commitments.
- Strong leadership skills and organisational ability; honesty, integrity and trust; good inter-personal and partnership skills and the ability to motivate colleagues.
- The capacity to represent UNI SCORE to international institutions, companies and to affiliates.
- Proven communication, advocacy and campaigning skills, including strong writing ability.
- The ability to plan strategically and administratively, as well as a track record in achieving targets.
- The flexibility to deal with fast-moving events that require a rapid response.
- Fluency in English, spoken and written, is essential. Knowledge of any other languages is an advantage.
The Campaigns Director will have a key role in implementing all aspects of this programme, under the direction of the Head of UNI SCORE.
The Campaigns Director will be based in the UNI Head Office. The terms and conditions of employment are according to the collective agreement existing between UNI, its employees in Nyon and their trade union.
The successful candidate will be expected to relocate to the Head Office region near Geneva, Switzerland and to take up the position as soon as possible after the interview.
