Director of Field Operations

Based in San Jose, CA

CSEA is a public employee union representing over 240,000 classified school employees who work in 750 school districts and community colleges in California. Examples of duties:

  • Maximize the union’s power in collective bargaining, representation and grassroots political action.
  • Manage and direct the Field Operations Department, which includes 10 Field Offices with approximately 175 Labor Relations Representatives.
  • Engage members and staff, and ensure they have training and resources to be effective.
  • Develop and implement plans for increasing membership and dealing with right-to-work initiatives.
  • Recruit, hire, train and manage Field Directors and other Operations staff.
  • Negotiate and resolve sensitive and significant issues, including those raised by members, staff and the staff union.
  • Create and maintain relationships with the Association President, Board of Directors and members.
  • Allocate and budget resources to establish service and staff levels.
  • Manage the Department budget, approve expendi¬tures, adjust as necessary.
  • Coordinate and approve staff training.
  • Collaborate with Department managers to coordinate Field priorities and activities.

Knowledge of:
A comprehensive Field Operations program.

Ability to:

  • Work with the Executive Director, Association President, Board of Directors and senior management.
  • Gain trust and confidence of members and member leaders.
  • Engage in strategic planning with the members, managers and staff.
  • Analyze situations, issues, define solutions, and manage change.
  • Enhance leadership qualities throughout CSEA culture.
  • Inspire, develop and lead staff.
  • Show initiative, creativity and exercise sound judgment in negotiations, decision-making and conflict resolution.
  • Be a trusted advisor.
  • Handle high pressure situations with tact and professionalism.
  • Delegate authority and responsibility and establish accountability.
  • Select, supervise, train and evaluate supervisory, professional and technical staff.
  • Remain calm and think clearly under pressure.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, with impact, both orally and in writing.
  • Travel and work irregular hours or weekends

The ideal candidate will have the following background:

  • 6 years’ labor relations and management experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
