Position Summary:
Citizen Action of New York is building a powerful grassroots membership organizing by building community leadership in pursuit of transformational change and a vision of justice. We are seeking a highly motivated Statewide Organizing and Training Director to lead our talented and diverse organizing department.
The Statewide Organizing and Training Director works closely with the senior staff and lead organizer team, and is responsible for coordinating with Citizen Action’s affiliates at the national, state and local level. This position requires demonstrated knowledge of organizing techniques, grassroots lobbying principles, and familiarity with the legislative and political process in New York.
The candidate must have organizing grit, a bold vision, and be ready to roll up their sleeves and provide leadership to win strategic campaigns that will shape the growth and impact of Citizen Action. The candidate will ensure that Citizen Action achieves its organizing and political goals in the field; supervise, train and direct organizing staff; and design and implement organizing and political plans throughout the state. Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with Citizen Action staff, local leaders and members are critical attributes for this assignment. The scope of this assignment is statewide, so travel will be necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Statewide Organizing and Training Director performs a wide range of duties and responsibilities.
- Lead a staff of regional lead organizers—developing staff, working with the team to accomplish goals, and invest in their development. The main responsibility of the Director is to develop lead organizers and work with them closely to ensure that they are growing their regional chapters as efficiently and strategically as possible. This means working in the field side by side with regional teams.
- Work cooperatively with other organizations and their political/field representatives to build local and statewide relationships.
- Supervise, lead, assign, and evaluate staff including developing individual work plans with staff and overseeing their implementation and evaluation. Administer corrective discipline including termination if necessary.
- Ensure that organizing staff adhere to reporting, training and evaluation systems.
- Reporting to funders, board of directors, and staff.
- Recruit, interview, and recommend hiring staff.
- Formulate and administer organizing and political plans and campaigns.
- Mentor staff in building political and grassroots power, training staff on political organizing, skills building, racial justice and fundraising.
- Help lead organizers recruit members and allies to run for office.
- Work with staff to develop and execute electoral and issue-based campaign plans.
- Work independently exercising judgement within the scope of responsibility.
Experience
At least five years of specific work experience as a community organizer, issue and legislative-based campaigns, electoral campaigns, and/or union organizing that would provide for the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of organizing and political campaign strategies, skills, planning and execution.
- Ability to work independently with members and elected leaders in complex political situations.
- Ability to earn trust and lead a team using a coaching approach.
- Ability to deal with complex race relations in building a multi-cultural organization.
- More than three years of experience in supervising and leading a team.
- Knowledge and experience with managing voter contact and field campaigns.
- Extensive knowledge of and experience working with the Voter Action Network (VAN).
- Strong community outreach, organizing and engagement skills.
- Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships and to work in a team.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain working relationships with key stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple high-priority campaigns in different regions of the state.
- Ability to manage and help develop electoral and grassroots campaign plans, logistics and timelines.
- Ability to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work with leaders, staff, partners and operate with a high level of judgment and discretion.
