The Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) is a union, dedicated to improving the workplace and the quality of life for all education employees and to protecting their hard-won rights. The Government Relations Division is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Government Relations Specialist, who will be responsible for representing MTA and advocating for MTA’s mission in the General Court and through the electoral process. Our ideal candidate will promote political action among MTA members in order to achieve legislative and electoral goals.
The duties for this position include but are not limited to:
- Analyze educational information, economic data and the political environment to determine how best to advance MTA’s agenda.
- Prepare materials for distribution to the Legislature, other governmental entities and MTA members.
- Testify before committees.
- Lobby individual legislators and staff.
- Collaborate with MTA locals and staff to provide information, lobbying and political training.
- Collaborate with coalitions to help achieve MTA’s legislative and political goals.
- Serve as staff to assigned MTA committees.
- Assist National Education Association (NEA), as needed, in Congressional and electoral works.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
To be successful in the role you will need:
- Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred).
- Proven ability to interact positively with a variety of personalities.
- Proven ability to successfully participate as a member of a team.
- Ability to identify and analyze issues of importance to public employees and to take responsible action.
- Self-motivation.
- Attention to detail and follow-through.
- Proven experience to analyze written materials, evaluate situations quickly, and respond appropriately.
- Ability to process papers and redraft written materials on the spot (reading, writing, sorting and carrying documents).
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities.
- Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and e-mail systems.
- Willingness to travel and to work nights and weekends.
- Valid Driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
