POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Director of Hospitals makes the biggest impact through creativity, organization, flexibility, and an overall mindset that views working to find the right people, and helping them succeed, as a mission critical challenge that will help change our organizational culture. This is a managerial position at SEIU Healthcare with responsibility, in collaboration with the Senior Management Team, for developing and leading the strategy for building power for hospital workers across Ontario. The Director will lead a team that will execute participatory and powerful campaigns to negotiate and win collective bargaining agreements, organize effective member leaders, defend contracts, and communicate to all members. These responsibilities include oversight of all labour relations initiatives within the sector in close collaboration with our Member Resource Centre. The Director will also be responsible to lead member education and mobilization programs in support of our broader organizational strategy to strengthen a wider movement for social justice and political participation across our hospital membership.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works closely with the Senior Management Team to develop and execute multi-year sectorial strategies and internal organizing plans that support our overall organizational mandate to build a strong union that includes hospital workers.
  • Works closely with the Senior Management Team to imagine, develop, execute, and continuously evaluate organizational programs and initiatives related to the hospital sector.
  • Works closely with the Director of Organizing to ensure that there are synergies between member service and external organizing that promote sustainable growth models that will contribute to a strong hospital sector.
  • Works closely with the Senior Management team to develop service quality standards for the hospital sector that help strengthen our relationship with our hospital members.
  • In close collaboration with the Member Resource Centre, oversees all aspects of labour relations in the sector, and provides guidance and direction to members of the hospital team when necessary.
  • Serves as the lead negotiator in major collective bargaining campaigns and assists other members of the hospital team in contract negotiations when necessary.
  • Builds and maintains productive employer relationships wherever possible.
  • Leads and supports staff in developing campaign plans and/or member actions to solve workplace problems and build power to win collective bargaining agreements.
  • Builds, develops, manages and motivates our hospital team with strong accountability frameworks that position our members and staff to be successful.
  • Facilitates continuous communication across the hospital team that will allow them to develop, review, and assess the work within the sector.
  • Works with member leaders, organizers, and other members of the hospital team to create and implement plans to strengthen the union.
  • Leads the hospital team and related member participation in the organization’s internal organizing, wider movement, and political programs.
  • Represents the organization in its relationships with the International Union, community and labor leaders and other organizations, as required.

EDUCATION:
At SEIU Healthcare, we understand that the best people do not always have the same access and opportunities to education, and while post-secondary education is always preferred, we want to make sure nothing stands in the way of finding the right person.

QUALIFACTIONS:

  • At least five years’ experience as a union organizer or staff person with responsibility for member organizing, member representation and program implementation.
  • Experience negotiating collective bargaining agreements and developing and executing contract action campaigns.
  • Experience motivating, supervising, evaluating and developing staff and holding them accountable to a campaign and/or work plan.
  • High level of facilitation and leadership skills in collaborative work.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of union staff and member leaders and lead in such a way to advance equity and inclusion of everyone in the union.
  • Exemplary proficiency in interpersonal communication, listening, conflict resolution, consensus building, and organizing persuasion with union members, staff, and allies.
  • Exercises high level of autonomous decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong planning skills, ability to discern priorities, and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Emotional intelligence and professional self-management under pressure.
  • Knowledge of union history, organization, and strategy.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including weekends and evenings and holidays as required.
