Basic Performance Expectations:
- Advisor of the Board of Directors and all staff unions/employees
- Liaison between all three companies: Michigan Education Association (MEA), Michigan Education Association-Financial Services (MEA-FS), and Michigan Educations Special Services Association (MESSA)
- Direct reports include the Executive Director of MEA-FS, Executive Director of MESSA and all Directors of MEA
- Fiscal Responsibilities of all three companies
- Representative on the Staff Retirement Board
- Liaison with American Federation of Teachers and other state and national educational affiliates
- Leader of the staff implementation of the MEA mission statement
- Liaison between MEA and the National Education Association (NEA) and all state affiliates
Assigned Duties:
- Immediate direction of the work of the Association staff and evaluation of the staff
- Act as General Manager of the Association under the direction of the Board
- Provide administrative duties to the Board and the Representative Assembly
- Prepare the Association budget in cooperation with the President and Secretary-Treasurer and subject to the guidelines adopted by the Representative Assembly (RA) and the MEA Board of Directors
- Responsible for the adoption and implementation of all staff programs consistent with the policies of the RA
- Oversee all governing bodies of the Association
- Represent the Association on matters of established policy
- Employ and supervise Directors in consultation with the President, subject to direction of the Board
- Meet with the President, Officers, and appropriate staff to confer on policies and procedures
- Report to the Board and to the RA
- Inform Locals of the number of RA delegates to which each Local is entitled and of election procedures as prescribed by the Constitution
- Serve as a consultant to the Michigan delegation to the NEA Representative Assembly
- Perform specific duties as assigned by the Board of Directors
- Establish and maintain relationships with all Board of Directors and Staff and outside stakeholders
- Other duties as assigned by the President or Board of Directors
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
- Experience in Organizing in the areas of Social Justice, employment concerns and political action
- Experience in managing a varied and diverse group of employees
- Good driving record
- Experience in presentations, public speaking and facilitation
- Experience in contract negotiations
- High level of communication skills both written and spoken
- Ability to use and operate current technology
- Ability to develop and maintain a positive working environment for all
- Relevant leadership skills
- Understanding of the political process as it pertains to member and public school advocacy
- Experience in a union environment
- Ability to manage highly confidential information
- Honor and belief in public education advocacy for all students and employees
Preferred Requirements:
- Master’s Degree in a related field
- Experience in managing a large scale budget
- Knowledge of current issues facing public education, including Education Support Professionals, Higher Education and PreK-12 Educators
