Texas AFT Senior Organizer
Starting Salary: $65,000

The Texas AFT is posting for a Senior Organizer position. The duties for this position include working with state, national, and local leaders to build strong local affiliates that are capable of organizing for power in school districts and at community colleges in Texas.

Texas AFT staff are subject to assignments throughout the state based on the needs of the union. This position will be Houston-based.

Duties:
The Texas AFT Senior Organizer will be responsible for strengthening organizing, membership and leadership development programs of Texas AFT local affiliates and organizing committees.

Specific duties include:

  • Working with local elected leaders to organize and support teams of union leaders
  • Identifying and training leaders in Texas AFT locals and training local leaders to do the same
  • Working with local leaders to build local union capacity in the areas of: issues organizing, membership recruitment, leadership development, building representative systems, community relationships, publications, needs assessment, local budgeting, school district and school board relations, school budget analysis, negotiations and research
  • Developing and presenting training programs for local leaders and members
  • Working with Texas AFT’s legislative, political, professional issues, communications and technical assistance staff to support and assist affiliates and local leaders
  • Helping local affiliates participate in and lead coalitions of allied organizations
  • Maintaining liaison with state and national staff and the regional organizing team
  • May be required to manage local or project staff

The position is Houston-based and will require travel in the greater-Houston area and occasional travel to other parts of Texas

Qualifications:

  • Substantial experience organizing workers in unions and conducting organizing campaigns
  • Experience building leadership systems including building rep/steward structures
  • Experience developing and implementing leadership programs to identify and support member leaders
  • Proven ability to make persuasive written and oral presentations
  • Knowledge of public education, public-employee issues, and labor policy
  • Working knowledge of Texas AFT, Texas labor unions, and coalitions in which Texas AFT participates is a plus
  • Experience with field writing and grievance handling is a plus
  • Spanish speaker a plus
  • Must own car and carry comprehensive automobile insurance

Starting salary for the Texas AFT Senior Organizer is $65,000 with an increase each year of service based on the collective bargaining agreement with Texas AFT staff union. In addition to base salary, the position offers a wide range of benefits including:

  • Benefits of a union contract
  • Fully paid health and dental insurance for the employees and dependents
  • Fully paid disability income insurance for the employee and $50,000 term life insurance
  • 12 days sick leave per year
  • Three weeks’ vacation
  • Retirement equal to 22 percent of the employee’s salary
