Limited Duration Communications Specialist

Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA

Position description:
This is a temporary, full-time position for Communications Specialist with the Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals (OFNHP) Local 5017, representing over 5,000 healthcare workers in Oregon and SW Washington.

OFNHP is an affiliate of the healthcare division of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Create engaging campaign materials including direct mail pieces, flyers, and other literature.
  • Produce multimedia content for Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites.
  • Assist in developing talking points for organizing campaigns.
  • Frame messages for persuasive communication with multiple audiences, including healthcare workers, community stakeholders, elected officials, and media outlets.
  • Draft a wide variety of written content including articles for the web, press releases, op-eds, and letters to the editor.
  • Work with communications and organizing staff to plan and execute public relations strategies to support organizing, contract bargaining and legislative goals.
  • Work with organizing staff to recruit healthcare worker stories from the field for use in campaigns.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal, written, desktop publishing, design, and interpersonal communications skills;
  • Familiarity with design, layout, and desktop publishing programs including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign;
  • Ability to work independently under limited direction and balance conflicting demands;
  • Experience with new organizing, contract, and/or political campaigns preferred;
  • Knowledge of HTML a plus.

Requirements:

  • Campaign needs may require performing work in the field with members and outside constituents.
  • Must be available to travel within Washington State and Oregon.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and insured vehicle.

Compensation:

  • Salary is negotiable, based on experience.
