Full-Time External Lead Organizer

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), AFL-CIO is seeking Lead Organizers for an external organizing project in Baltimore and Washington DC. The AFT is seeking creative, experienced, hard-working organizers who are excited to work strategically on external organizing campaigns. This is a full-time project-based position and candidates should have the following competencies:
- Proven ability to mentor, motivate and coordinate staff in all aspects of organizing including regular check ins and development of work plans
- Conduct field campaign briefs and debriefs with staff
- Provide high levels of strategic input
- Evaluate campaign status, including but not limited to messaging, numeric assessments interpretation and campaign field needs to Campaign Director
- Help oversee and move a variety of aspects of a campaign including building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists
- Lead Organizer experience as demonstrated by knowledge, skills, abilities and results
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Willing to work long and irregular hours
- Dedicated to social and economic justice, and public education
- Be in possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population
- Have strong communications skills
- Be motivated, responsible, organized, professional and detail-oriented
- Be able to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from the Campaign Director.
- Experienced in community, student, labor, or environmental activism is a plus
- Bilingual, especially Spanish/English, is desirable
- Being comfortable organizing a highly educated workforce is desirable
- Experience with higher education policy and issues is desirable
- Being a skilled and experienced Lead Organizer, ideally with 2-3 years of experience in the labor movement, particularly in higher education or working with professionals, is desirable
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Moving field turf toward the goals and objectives of the campaign;
- Assigning and as necessary adjusting turf assignments;
- Creating a campaign calendar and plan with goals and escalating tactics when necessary;
- Working with other organizers to develop turf goals;
- Continuous and effective communication to and between organizing staff and the campaign director;
- Working directly with rank-and-file leadership on projects, issues, strategic field and comprehensive campaigns and objectives;
- Coordinating the activities of member subcommittees and workgroups;
- Working with members and staff on campaign communications and messaging including field literature and communications and organizing conversations/rap writing;
- Identification of large scale organizing opportunities, development of a strategic field plan and strategic input into the comprehensive components of the campaign plan;
- Mentoring, motivating and coordinating staff in all aspects of organizing including regular check ins and development of work plans;
- Conducting field campaign briefs and debriefs with staff;
- Providing high levels of strategic input;
- Evaluating campaign status, including but not limited to messaging, numeric assessments interpretation and campaign field needs to Campaign Director;
- Organizer development and effectiveness;
- Navigating local and state politics, including union, legislative/electoral, and community;
- Conducting meetings with workers’ employer(s);
- Identification and integrating of available resources into the campaign;
- Conducting skills inventory of organizers and contributing assessments of organizers that may be part of the organizer evaluation process;
- Acting as a liaison to other unions, groups and organizations;
- Providing regular reports to the project or Campaign Director;
- Organize and mobilize workers;
- Attend regular meetings with supervisors and team to discuss progress and plan activities
- One-on-one visits, site visits, meetings, and other interaction with members and potential members;
- Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a regular basis;
- Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required;
- Take direction on activities to grow AFT membership and accomplish goals.
