Arizona AFL-CIO seeks a Executive Director to provide vision, direction and leadership to our organization and our work.  We are looking for a passionate and energetic individual who is committed to Labor, social justice values and works well in a collaborative team-oriented setting.  Our ideal candidate has a proven track record of working with diverse members, and brings experience in organizational leadership, planning and strategy development, fund development, staff management, public relations, and coalition-building.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Executive Council and General Board Relations

Facilitates effective Executive Council and General Board work; communicates clearly and effectively with Council and Board members.

  • Provide leadership to Executive Council and General Board.
  • Work with Executive Council design, implement organizational policies.
  • Maintains relationships with all affiliate leaders.

2. Fiscal Management and Financial Development
Develops and controls budgets; prepares accurate and timely reports; establishes good relationships with affiliates.

  • Work at the direction of the Executive Council to lead national fundraising, raise organizational budget, research fundraising opportunities, write grants and reports.
  • Work with Executive Council to lead coordination of special events.
  • Work with Executive Council to support fundraising.
  • Manage the day to day operations of the Arizona AFL-CIO fiscal structure.

3. Political and Legislative Work
Develops and maintains ongoing work and social relationships with elected officials in local, statewide and federal offices. Executes Arizona AFL-CIO endorsements of political candidates and ballot measures.

  • Lobbies elected officials in local, statewide and federal offices representing the Arizona AFL-CIO.
  • Lobbies during Legislative Session.
  • Represents the Arizona AFL-CIO in national coalitions, groups and other organizations when needed.
  • Works with Executive Board to review candidates for political offices and ballot measures.
  • Works with Executive Board to make endorsements and Arizona AFL-CO support of approved candidates or ballot measures.
  • Works with Executive Board and entire Arizona AFL-CO when opposing candidates or ballot measures.

4.  Public Relations & Coalition Work

  • Effectively and persuasively communicates the mission and programs; cultivates and manages good relations with media and key local, state and national networks and collaborations.
  • Serve as spokesperson and representative of Arizona AFL-CIO, in national and state issue campaigns, media, and coalitions.
  • Work with communications staff to develop op-eds, press statements and releases, PSA’s, organizational communications, training materials and curricula, issue oriented reports.
  • Public speaking on behalf of Arizona AFL-CIO, at conferences, events, speaking/training opportunities.

5. Planning, Strategy & Program Development
Provides clear strategic direction; assures strategic plan is created and used/updated; takes timely action to resolve problems; leads in the development of and new opportunities for base building; ensures leadership development and policy change are consistent with the mission.

  • With Executive Council engage in big-picture thinking, trend analysis, and direction-setting for the organization.
  • Help lead and oversee statewide strategic planning and staff planning. Participate in key strategic planning workgroups.
  • Work with Executive Council and staff to design, oversee, direct and implement multiple Arizona AFL-CIO and national issue campaigns.
  • Direct, coordinate, and represent Arizona AFL-CIO in national coalition issue campaigns.
  • Help coordinate campaign administration, strategies, materials, evaluation.
  • Help provide leadership to statewide and local campaigns.

Qualifications:

  • At least five years leadership experience with a labor, community or political organization.
  • Union experience a plus.
  • Social justice vision.
  • Ability to inspire and support others.
  • Excellent planning and management skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven funder and donor relations experience.
  • Proven grant writing, budgeting and reporting experience.
  • Proven significant strategic planning and supervision experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion and proven history of working well with diverse populations including but not limited to: people who may be low-income, people of color, immigrants, those with disabilities and LGBTQ individuals.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office and experience with constituent database programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of both PC and Mac operating systems.
  • Bilingual and bicultural experience a plus.
