The United Educators of San Francisco (UESF), AFT/CFT, AFL-CIO, NEA/CTA, has an opening for a full-time staff representative. UESF represents more than 6,200 San Francisco Unified School District employees, including teachers, counselors, para-educators, security aides, psychologists, community relations specialists, nurses, and speech therapists. STAFF REPRESENTATIVE
Engage the membership in:
- Organizing site leadership
- Developing divisional leaders
- Identifying educational leaders
- Triaging contract violations and grievances
Ability to:
- Guide and assist Union Building Representatives to design and manage internal organizing campaigns at work sites
- Conduct training and workshops to:
- Motivate site leadership
- Empower membership
- Educate representatives
- Encourage initiative
- Research, investigate, and recommend solutions to member and work site problems
- Represent members in grievance and investigatory meetings
- Resolve membership concerns relative to conditions of employment
- Listen actively and frame issues
- Demonstrate initiative and exercise independent judgment in the performance of duties
- Communicate effectively before large groups
- Handle confidential material and situations efficiently and with complete security
- Remain calm and think clearly under pressure
- Prepare and present clear, concise and complete reports
- Demonstrate computer literacy, including use of Microsoft Office, email, iCal, and web research
- Work a flexible schedule including some evenings and some weekend work
QUALIFICATIONS
Basic knowledge of or willingness to learn quickly:
- California Education Code
- Public employee labor relations law and PERB decisions
- Principles and procedures of the administrative hearing process; employee-employer relations; school budgeting and programming processes; collective bargaining; techniques of research and investigation
- Appropriate English usage (oral and written)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Background in Labor Studies, Public Administration, Education, Business Administration, Industrial Relations or a related college major is desirable, and Recent active service as a UESF officer (UBC member, committee member, building representative, etc.), or Experience as a paid union representative and/or organizing staff.
PREFERRED
- Experience as a public-school employee or staff of a public employee union
- Second language skills: Chinese, Spanish
- Experience with a membership from a diverse and varied background
REQUIRED
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license
COMPENSATION
This is a salaried position. Compensation and benefits are based on union contract and include medical, dental, vision, retirement and paid leave benefits. Starting salary is $78,177 or more, depending on experience.
