Communications Associate

Based in Seattle, WA

Service Employees International Union 6 Property Services Northwest represents 6,000 janitors, security officers, and airport and stadium workers. We are seeking a new team member with strong communication and digital media skills for the Communications Associate position to help advance our goals of improving standards in the industries we serve, the working conditions of our members, and the communities we live in.

Position:
The Communications Associate is responsible for the day-to-day production and maintenance of SEIU6’s external and member communications. The Communications Associate will work with department staff and members to create and implement strategic communication efforts utilizing a wide range of traditional and social media tools to advance workplace and legislative campaigns.

The successful candidate will be able to work independently on a variety of assignments with minimal supervision, and be comfortable working in a fast-paced, collegial and team-oriented environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Strategic Research and Affairs staff to develop and drive campaign communications plans;
  • Initiate contact, respond to inquiries and build relationships with print, radio, television and online journalists;
  • Create and mobilize online communities of SEIU6 members and our supporters;
  • Produce news releases and advisories, press kits, factsheets and other campaign materials;
  • Work with members to capture personal stories, create talking points and develop spokespeople;
  • Manage website and social media accounts; and
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Proven commitment to social, economic, and worker justice;
  • Experience in strategic communications planning;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Suites software;
  • Familiarity with online social media tools;
  • Willingness to work with our members and staff who represent a large array of races, cultures, religions and backgrounds;
  • Flexibility to work long and irregular hours, including some weekends and occasional travel; and
  • Possess a driver’s license and an insured motor vehicle.

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficiency in a second language (non-English);
  • Commonly used programming language skills (i.e. JavaScript, Python, CSS); and
  • Involvement in community issues.
